Default Im starting to think this iPhone is actually bricked.

I have a friend's iPhone 3G 8gb here which he said was broken after an attempted firmware upgrade whilst jailbroken. I told him that this was unlikely that it was completely broken so he gave it to me to fix it.

Apparently he tried updating it (2.2 to 2.2.1?) whilst it was jailbroken and now when you turn it in it comes up with a cartoon of steve jobs (The custom symbol for recovery mode).

I have tried restoring it with a windows and a mac pc, both in DFU and the recovery mode that it is stuck into, using a myriad of different software versions, but it always errors during the restore, usually giving error (6) or (1600)

I am completely out of ideas at this point in time on how to fix it, any suggestions are welcome.
