I just got an iphone 3g today, I'm sort of a noob, so please bare with me. I want to jailbreak and unlock it. It is brand new, with the 3.0.1(7A400) firmware, and my baseband is 04.26.08. So i have a few questions to ask before I do anything, and I would love if you guy's could help me out.

If I jailbreak & unlock my firmware using redsn0w 0.8, is there anything I'm missing out by not having the 3.1.2 firmware? such as any fixes, sms stuff, etc...

If I download redsn0w 0.94, is it still possible to unlock and jailbreak the firmware 3.0.1 using the same techniques as in redsn0w 0.8? such as downloading firmware 3.0 when jailbreaking on redsn0w 0.8.

If I want to upgrade to 3.1.2, what is the best way to upgrade, jailbreak, and unlock?

Thats all my questions for now, I would greatly appreciate it if you guys answer em for me.

Redsn0w 0.9.4 is a special version for some second generation iPod touch models. It might work with other models but it is not guaranteed.

Redsn0w 0.9.2 is the most recent version for your 3G iPhone. It can jailbreak 3.0, 3.0.1 (by pointing it at a 3.0 ipsw) and 3.1.2 and 3.1.3 (by pointing it at a 3.1.2 IPSW)

If you want to unlock. I recommend you jailbreak at 3.0.1 with redsn0w 0.9.2 then unlock with ultrasn0w.

After this, you should do everything possible to keep 04.26.08 baseband. This means never restoring with original IPSW and only using pwnagetool/custom ipsw to jailbreak.

This way you can get access to 3.1.x features but keep the most stable unlock (ultrasn0w). Blacksn0w is not as stable an unlock (but is the only choice if you let your baseband get upgraded)
