I am planning on getting an iPhone 3G but I have a small issue; I don't want the data plan.

I am in college and my campus is 100% Wi-Fi so there is no need to pay $30 a month when I don't need it. Plus there is no 3G service on campus.

Is there a way to get around the required data plan?

Maybe via the IMEI? Maybe blocking? Anything? I really need a new phone and the iPhone is my top choice right now.

just wishful thinking i'm afraid. Unless there is some way to get it through t-mobile. I've never tried it but maybe you can grab a SIMM card from another phone with no data plan and see if you can still work with your iPhone. It may be worth it if that works to get a cheap-o phone and plan and then find an iPhone to stick the simm card in. I would be SUPER cautious though as i know that even though your campus is 100% wifi you leave it sometimes. There are so many data extensive things going on with the iPhone i could see you getting really screwed on data charges by accident. Sounds like you just need to wait and get a phone that you can afford.
