Default how can I be sure that the iPhone is officially unlocked?

A found a guy on Craig's List who maintains that his iPhone 3G was purchased in Hong Kong and thus is officially, permanently unlocked. If I meet him, is there an easy way to verify that the phone is indeed permanently unlocked?

Depends on what version of the firmware he is on.
    If its the latest version.
PUt your sim in and it should work.

Chk if he has installed Cydia / Yellow Snow / Ultra snow etc.

If he has its not factory unlocked.
If he has no such apps and your sim works then its factory unlocked or hardware unlocked.

On a 2G that's not proof, because I have an unlocked/jailbroken phone without Cydia, but can you install YellowSnow / Ultrasnow and then remove Cydia and have the setup still work?
