hiya. this has probably been answered several times over- but i've been searching for days and can't find one - or i have and i'm techno-stupid and haven't understood the answer!

i have 2 iphone 3g's, both with firmware 2.2.1, and i'd like to unlock and jailbreak one, while just jailbreaking the second. i've been to a few local shops, and they've all told me i can't do a soft unlock, there hasn't been one developed for 2.2.1, so i've been looking into getting either a rebel or gevey sim to unlock the one i'd like unlocked. (a present for the bf)

but i would also like to jailbreak this phone - i've been told this isn't possible as it would render the iphones into an ipod touch -having no phone capabilities.
is it impossible to both unlock and jailbreak the iphone
3g running 2.2.1 firmware? if it is, can i just jailbreak the one phone, and it will maintain it's phone capabilties?! what about future firmware updates?

please help i am soooooooo confused.

There is no software unlock for 2.2.1 yet.
