Default [Help] New AT&T iPhone 3G in the UK

Basically, I was in Miami, and decided to splash out on a white 16GB iPhone 3G at Best Buy. It comes with an AT&T SIM and all that shebang. I want to unlock said phone for use with Vodafone UK, but I don't know how to go about this. At the moment, the iPhone says Emergency Calls and wants me to connect to iTunes. I connected to iTunes with my Vodafone SIM inside, and it doesn't like that at all. So should I connect and activate with this AT&T card I have? I don't at all care about jailbreaking my iPhone, but if its necessary, then I will do it. At the moment I have no idea what Firmware and Modem Firmware (baseband?) I am, as I haven't activated the phone. Any help will be much appreciated.

Basic steps for jailbreaking the iphone can be found on iClarified - Apple News and Tutorials - use the search or drill down to the how to section for iphone.
Once activated during the jailbreak process you can check the FW and Modem version but I have very little hope that it will be anything other than 2.2.1 and 2.30 if it is a new purchase.
    Good luck!
