Help me buying an Iphone 3G
I have to decide by tomorrow whether to buy an Iphone 3G 16GB or not.
Whats the issue?
Well, first of all, Im from Argentina and Im planning to buy it in the States (Best Buy). Yeah, I dont have another option (EBay, Craiglist, etc).
So they sell this Iphone 3G with an AT&T contract. Of course, I wont be able to use it that way here in Argentina. So I need to know if Im going to have problems unlocking it in order to use my sim card.
Meaning, by no means Im a tech wiz, if this is something hard to do, well, maybe I shouldnt buy it.
So, should I go ahead and buy it? (This is not a "yeah, its a great phone, you should buy it" thing. What worries me is the AT&T contract and if Im going to be able to use it).
Thanks a lot.
There's 3 things that determine whether your iPhone 3G is unlockable or not:
1) The operating system or firmware version (2.2 and below unlockable)
2) The baseband or modem firmware (2.28.00 and below unlockable)
3) The bootloader (5.08 and below unlockable)
You can find the firmware and baseband versions at "Settings -> About -> General" and you'll have to download FuzzyBand to find your bootloader (there's a long long alternative method, google it up).
Buy the iPhone at your own risk coz if even one of these things is off, you're going to end up using a turbosim (which unlocks most of the functionality but still has some usability issues; some turbosims have signal dropping issues while some don't allow for using 3G/Edge/GPRS etc).
Along the same lines as Satrapa...
I'm currently running a 2G on T-mo's network. Its been a decent arrangement, where I pay them some dollars a month, they provide me with cell service and leave me alone. My only complaint is their network (patchy here in Hawaii).
Soo...I'm thinking about making the move to AT&T. But, I absolutely refuse to deal with their contract bullshit. So I'm curious - how are you guys getting your iPhone 3G's?
Ideally, I'd like to go on a monthly plan with AT&T, but pay retail for the phone and not sign a contract. Is this even possible?
Obviously if it isnt, I'll get one on the grey market and unlock it. Its hard to ignore 3G though, especially with PDANet.
Thanks in advance!
Grey market -> jailbreak/unlock -> Use whatever provider
