    - download firmware 2.2 (not 2.2.1 !!!) for your iphone 3G
    - install itunes 8 on your mac.
    - DO NOT update your mac to 10.5.6 because you will not be able to put the phone in DFU mode.
    - connect phone to computer
    - Now put the iphone in DFU mode (see a sticky post to understand how to put iphone in DFU)
    - once in DFU, itunes will detect the phone and ask if you want to check , say yes
    - next, it to hold down option key and click restore
    - select the firmware 2.2 you downloaded.
    - when it's done restore, you will see the cable + usb on the iphone screen.

    - now put you subbed ATT sim in and let itunes activate it.

(if you don't have legit ATT subbed, then you need to jailbreak/activate your phone using quickpwn).
