Where can we download a version of 2.2.1 with the old modem firmware.

just did a google and the first url leads you to a custom 2.2.1 ipsw file...

but the comments show that people are having issues with the no signal... not sure if its down to them not installing yellowsn0w or the actual baseband has been upgraded....

yeah I figured.
Went directlly to piratebay and got the firmware.
But the comments / feedback was not so good. i.e. a lot of guys having problems.

Sadlly looking for a mac in my country is like looking for a needle in a hay stack.

Will wait. As quickpawn seems to be causing problems. It took out the wifi on my 2G.

And quite a few quickpawn guys are reporting the same with their 3Gs.

So If I got this right.
I keep my official sim and official 2.2 on the phone.
Get a custom IPSW with 2.2.1 thru pawnage. And then I dump it to the phone. In DFU mode. Thru itunes 8.02 right.

Quick question re pawnage tool for mac.
whats the deal with the password ?
Are we setting up a user on the iphone ?

That's it. If your iPhone 3G already is pwnaged (jailbroken) at 2.2 you do not need DFU, simple restore/recovery mode will do then.

One more explanation here: Your iphone has to be updated via iTunes to firmware 2.2 (NOT 2.2.1). This will give you the correct firmware.

Custom 2.2.1 firmware made by pwnage update everything to firmware 2.2.1 BUT the baseband. It does not touch the baseband at all. So you are still with the baseband the iPhone had before.
Thats why you have to be at fw 2.2 first, making sure you have baseband 02.28.00.
After using the custom firmware you still have 02.28.00, cause it does not get touched. And 02.28.00 is the baseband Yellowsn0w deals with ;-)

Other way round: Some users are still at firmware 2.1 (for example) with baseband 02.11.07. Using a custom firmware 2.2.1 wont help, cause after applying they are at firmware 2.2.1 but with baseband 02.11.07 - the one Yellowsn0w wont like.

Hope this explanation helps a bit to understand the mechanism.

Let me answer the question in general: It is like getting a system for your pc from someone you dont know - you dont know whats in.

I am not saying the firmware you are referring to does not work. All the problems that users comment in there are homegrown. You have to be in DFU to avoid problems...

I'd always try to find a person with a Mac and just create my personal custom firmware with PwnageTool 2.2.5. You dont even have to use his Mac to DFU/apply the firmware. Once PwnageTool has created it on the desktop of the Mac, quit PwnageTool and copy the created custom firmware on a USB stick, copy it to your Mac/Windows-PC. Connect iPhone and Mac/PC, put the iPhone in DFU mode, iTunes will popup and do a shift-restore (win) or option-restore (mac).

Some users find it hard to follow the instruction to get into DFU mode in PwnageTool. This is just a very nice option of PwnageTool, you dont have to. Once the custom firmware is done, you can quit the programm and apply it later - thats what ppl do with cfw they download from somewhere...

I have asked somebody in the US to try and help me out.
But again if your not there you can only hope the guy dont goof up and send you the wrong file.

IS there anyway I can open the file and confirm Im not puting the wrong version on ?
