Default Help! -power button and volume up not working

I have an iphone 3G version 3.0 FW 4.26.08. I started having a few issues last night after upgrading some apps:

    1) Power button will not bring up the slide-to-shut down screen.
--I can do a reset by holding the power and home button together
    2) Volume rocker only works to decrease sound
    3) After doing a reset, phone flashes apple logo indefinitely
--If I plug the phone into my MBP and open itunes, it will show my phone, and then my phone's screen changes to the shut down screen with the red slider.
-----Hitting cancel gives me my home screen with everything working but the power button and increase volume
-----If I slide and shut down, does the same thing as a reset.

Where I'm at now after a few resets: My phone just flashes the apple logo indefinitely, and if I plug it into my computer iTunes opens and says "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes. The iphone screen has a usb adapter pointing to an itunes icon.

What should I do? I don't want to be upgraded to the latest FW which would make it so I cannot unlock my phone...

Can I use iTunes and have it use version 3.1.2 - or would that still upgrade the FW?

(I do have a custom 3.1.2 from pwnagetool)

    Thanks!

restored it to 3.0 so I could keep my same baseband.

now having the issue where the power button and volume up still not working. I assume that the blinking logo I was getting when restarting was due to this problem with the power button. I haven't tried restarting it yet since restoring to 3.0

Sounds very much like a hardware problem, should be relatively cheap to get these parts replaced via an unofficial repair shop.

If you still have applecare - definitely get Apple to repair/replace the phone under warranty. Only use the unofficial option if you have no choice with Applecare.

I searched all over the internet for a fix. I realized that by squeezing me case together I could occasionally get the power button to work and realized it was something physical or hardware like you said. One person suggested dropping the phone (in a protective case) about 4 feet onto a carpeted floor - I did that and now it all works. Crazy...
