Default [GPS and Maps] Need some things cleared up

I got a hold of the iphone and tested its gps. I loaded the map when I was on a wifi network, put in my destination and went for a test drive. Once I was at a location that the map needs to load, all I got was black and white lines. No picture what so ever. So, does this means that I need a data plan to fully use gps? If so, this sucks. What if I'm at a location where edge/3g reception is slow or don't exsist? I'll be lost! Why not build in the maps like Nokia or other phones? Any way around this?

Thats the way it works for now. Some guys here tried a hack to preload and cache big chunks of maps, but this is more for testing.
We'll have to wait for 3rd parties here either allowing to cache all resolutions on a route you have been choosing and use them or one of the TomTom corps showing up with their own map material. time will show.

Hopefully the solution will come soon. I was going to trade my iphone for a nokia n96. You just made me feel a bit better and I'll hold off to see what happens.
