Default Going to London - Can I buy iPhone 3G?

Ok, so Im a Norwegian-citizen and Im going to London this weekend.

A friend of mine says all I need to do is go to a store (that sells iPhones obv), buy an iPhone with some kind of cash based subscription and I can use one of the x-sim solutions with out any problems.

This sounds great, but I have not managed to find out if this actually is the case. Can anyone confirm if this is how it works? Im prepared to pay aruond £450 for a locked iPhone 16GB, but can I really buy one without being a British-citizen?

I would add 20 pound sterling and get an unlocked iPhone 3G 16GB from Italy - that is working for sure.

yes you can, did this too a few weeks ago without any problems. Will cost you £410 with the prepaid sim. Thing is that we now have the 2.2 Firmware and I dunno if they're still selling 2.1 versions!

Ok, thanks for fast answers. Is there any limits as to how many I can buy? Thinking of christmas-gifts.

Hopefully it will be 2.1, or they will make x-sim for 2.2.

Would a lot more expensive than 20 pound for me to get to Italy. Around £150 at least.

Sorry, you are right, it is 569 Euro/492 £, so 72 to add. It's worth for me cause I dont have to think about firmware versions, upgrades and stuff

I just had my phone replaced on Sunday in Japan and they gave me a phone with FW 2.1 on it. So, I think they will hand you a 2.1 as long as you don't delay in getting one.

You can buy an iphone outright from Telstra 8gb for around $750 AUD, you then have to ring Telstra to unlock the phone which can take 3-5days. To unlock it costs another 150.
