    Default A few basic questions

So I've had my iPhone 3g since release and I'm just now getting around to looking into unlocking it.

So, a few simple questions for you all (and again, sorry that I'm a giant noob).

First, I do have a contract with AT&T, so I don't need to unlock it for the sake of moving to a different phone company. What are the other benefits of unlocking an iPhone? What is the difference between unlocking and jail braking? How risky is it unlocking it?

Basically, I want to do more with my phone and I hear this is the way to do it (without paying ungodly amounts for apps). So, any answers would be awesome, thanks!!
