Default Factory unlocked phone with Baseband 6.15.00 question

Hello everyone, and thank you for reading this. I have an issue with my wife's phone and will first post the short story, then the long and complete story.

Short story: IPhone 3G was purchased jail broken (we didn't know it was jail broken). It was on 3.1.3 and the wifi wouldn't connecto to networks, I attempted to update it to 4.2.1 and bricked the phone. I found a video on youtube detailing a way to restore the phone back to factory specs. I did that, but contacted AT&T and requested an unlock. It was granted, but phone will not connect to wifi. Firmware is listed as 6.15.00

Long story: My wife has had her Iphone 3G for almost 3 years. It was purchased 'unlocked' from a friend in Vietnam. The phone had issues with connecting to wife, and myself having little experience with Iphones checked Apple's website. Some people had luck with updating from 3.1.3 to 4.2.1 and restoring wifi. I decided to give it a try and proceeded to brick her phone. At this point I realized she didn't have a factory unlock as claimed. . . I tried Apple's forums and was told they can't help because my phone was jail broken. I was told the same thing at the Apple Store. So I went to youtube and found this video. How to: Fix ERROR 1015 iPhone 3G STUCK ITUNES-STEP BY STEP! - YouTube
At the end of the video he mentions if you use this method it will return the phone to factory specs, and locking it to it's original provider, and if they are who you use to put the sim card in it and your phone will work. If not to jail break it. I chose to contact AT&T (We have T-Mobile) and request an unlock. It was granted and unlocked through Itunes. The phone will pick up wifi networks, but fail to connect to any, including non password connections. I tried mimic settings under static as well, but it wasn't until I compared the settings to another 3g's settings and saw the firmware was different. Google tells me this is an Ipad base band and will prevent her phone from using wifi, blue tooth, or GPS. Her GPS works fine with my sim in it (hers does not have a data plan). I've seen some methods posted to downgrade to a lower baseband but they require jail breaking aftwords. Will updating to 4.2.1 actually fix this issue? Or do I need to change the baseband separately? If I have to change it separately will it affect my factory unlock?
Thank you taking time to read this.
    -Chris

I found this information about downgrading the baseband, but it does not mention anything about affecting my factory unlock status. iClarified - iPhone - How to Downgrade Your iPhone 3GS, 3G Baseband for Unlock (Windows)

Update for anyone who finds this thread, the link in my previous post had no effect. I tried redsnow versions b3 and b2 for windows, then selected firmware version 3G 3.1.3 because I currently have 3.1.3 on my Iphone 3G and it gave me an error saying it was an invalid version. I am attempting an update through Itunes as this phone is factory unlocked. Hopefully that will have some positive effect.

Itunes failed to update and ended with error 1015. . Fixed that and redsnow recognizes firmware 4.2.1 and I am trying that. I am currently getting the scrolling text and waiting for the pwnapple to display.

15 minutes later and no pwnapple. The scrolling text has ended 10 minutes or so ago and has been stuck on the message, "panic: we are hanging here" Any idea what I need to do?

Update: I put the Iphone into DFU mode, then attempted recovery to get the 1015 error. After this I installed 4.2.1 as rednsow apparently doesn't work with firmware below 4.0 then I attempted again to downgrade the base band. It completed each step, but was left with the no service, and gave me an imei number not found message after reboot. Itunes would not unlock it (it would unlock it after each fox from the 1015 error). I deactivated redsnow, then put iphone into DFU mode and did a restore through Itunes. Her phone is now on 4.2.1, base band 5.15.04 yet won't connect to wifi that has no password. I'll mess with it later. Note: wifi was never greyed out at any time, it simple would say unable to join.

Still no luck. I've attempted resetting the router, updating router firmware, manually entering mac address, disabling password protection, changing the channel from auto to each numbered option available, changed encryption type, changed from N to G. . . All to no avail. My router is a Belkin Wireless N, model number F7D1301 v1. I've even tried to manually input the DHCP settings. . Both by using my router information and my brother's Iphone 3GS settings. It won't connect to other brands of router either. I've Installed T-Mobile's network bundle to enable auto MMS settings and it has no affect on wifi settings. I ended up going to T-Mobile and adding data to her plan. . Not the route I wanted, but I can't seem to find the answer.
