Unhappy erased all contents and settings 3g Now What?

Bought 3g on eBay. Experimenting with it (still not active with my T-Mobile) and stupid me pressed erase all contents and settings.

Now (natch) there is no system, only an iTunes icon. What can I do? Do I have an expensive paperweight here?

I have been searching for solutions but figured you're the best resource.

Using erase all content on an iPhone is only recommended if you want to sell it and make sure to not leave any data on it.
If it is done on a jailbroken iPhone you usually experience a hang.
What firmware are you at right now (I know the iPhone hangs)

I'm at work right now and do not have it with me. I cannot do anything on it but make an "emergency call" if that. I thought it was both jailbroken and updated at purchase.

There seems to be virtually nothing on it, similar to a wiped HD.

Can I go to a website and download all the programs and install them, and/or is there a mirror site?

    Sigh.

Basically IF it is still at baseband 02.28 that matches firmware 2.2 a restore to firmware 2.2 (NOT 2.2.1) will do. If it is at 2.2.1's baseband you got a problem - no unlock available.

I need a bit more history on what you did to the iPhone and what version it was when you received it.

    I received it yesterday.

Unlocked, Bluetooth Enabled, Calendar, Color Screen, Email Access, GPS, Internet Browser, Java Enabled, MMS Enabled, MP3 Player, Polyphonic Ringtones, SMS-Text Messaging, Speakerphone, Touch Screen, USB Interface, Video Recording iPhone 3G 8GB Cell Phone, # MB046LL/A.

I haven't a clue what version it was.

It wouldn't recognize my SIM card, so I did an "erase all contents and settings" ignoring the warnings.

I haven`t either. MMS enabled is a feature of the upcoming Firmware 3.0 in Summer, Video recording is - as far as I know - not even a feature of 3.0.

But I guess it is an iPhone at firmware 2.2 or 2.2.1 (with custom firmware) that was jailbroken and had extra apps on it.

The problem we have cause you are stuck right now and cant tell which firmware it really is, that taking action could lead to a brick.

You said you got it on eBay, right. Whats ben the description of the iPhone like?

I haven't had a response from the seller. Any more suggestions of how I could proceed?

You could try to DFU restore to Firmware 2.2 (NOT 2.2.1 YOU'LL BE STUCK IF YOU DO). If This works you could try Quickpwn 2.2.5 to jailbreak, activate unlock and optional retsore to a custom made firmware 2.2.1.

If you are not sure about the steps, check the forum on how to do this.
