    Default Disabling Data with AT&T

I want to get an iPhone 3g but am around wifi all day so the data plan would be a waste. Since you can get an iPhone pretty easily without a contract I was thinking of just getting one, jailbreaking it, and using BossPrefs to disable 3g and Edge. Does anyone see any problem with doing this or am I good?

You should be fine going this route, but eventually AT&T will start sending you occasional text messages saying you're not on an applicable data plan for the iPhone.

Ah, okay. So in the end i would just be wasting the money and time, because they will make me get rid of it eventually?

I wouldnt buy an iphone, if you are around wifi for at least half the time, i bought my iphone mostly for the ipod touch half of it, and also i needed a phone. I rarley use any 3G, and frankly, there are phones with 15$ plans that have better reception and fewer dropped calls,
if i were you, buy a cheap phone and an ipod touch, the iphone is just for, as they say: "fo show"

alot of people its not a option to carry 2 devices....so disabling the edge/3g network is a great idea for having a iphone for calls and all internet apps on wifi only for free.

They won't make you get rid of the iPhone, but they might put the data plan on the account without warning or limit access to other features/add-ons/etc until you contact AT&T to add the iPhone data plan on.
It's actually rumored in HowardForums that such mandatory data plan additions/changes (being done by AT&T dynamically without the customer's consultation) are being made on a per market basis now.

agreed, and disabling is a good idea, but i just have to say that the phone service is absolutley crap. many, many times i have been chatting with someone, and then her a couple beeps, only to look down displaying a "call failed" message
this could be pretty bad if talking to your boss to call in sick or whatever,,
if you are related to the utopia of the modern "business man", like the rogers guy with horrible service, and then the good looking guy is chatting away lol
if you are okay with a few dropped call's every now and then, then go for it!
