I have searched the forums here and come to the conclusion that the jury is out as to whether you can confidently use some kind of hack to block data on a 3G 3.1.3 AT&T phone without being hit with the monthly $25 bill.

I am correct in this? Have there been updates on this?

Generally - my understanding is no

Some people have reported they can get this working with iPhones obtained from outside US. My feeling is AT&T will detect these eventually also. (as they update their list of partial IMEIs to flag for required data plan).

They look at the first part of the IMEI to determine this. Before you ask - there are no known methods to spoof or change IMEI on 3G iPhone or newer.

Even if there was a way - we don't encourage discussion of such topics here as there are very few legal uses for changing IMEI - mostly people want to rebirth stolen / blocked phones by giving them a new IMEI.

Thanks Olethros - thats what I feared. Is it any different for an original iPhone, or does it use the same process?

The only difference is that it is in theory possible to change IMEI for a 1st gen iPhone.
