Red face Cydia Crashes, GPS off & RePawning?

Hey guys, i'm pretty new to iphone jailbreaking. I paid someone to do it for me because I was so confused with all the conflicting articles on the web. Anyhow, needless to say it was the best thing I've done.. however I'm running into a few snags and would appreciate some help.

About 2 months ago, CYDIA started crashing and won't allow me to add sources or install anything. I read there was a cydia update, but have NO idea where to get it from, or how to install it. is there a way to uninstall or re-install CYDIA? I read somewhere that other people experienced cydia crashing due to broken/dodgy sources. Can anyone confirm this?

2ndly, is it possible to use the repawning software (once the phone has already been jailbroken) just to add installer 4? The guy who jailbroke my phone didn't put it on for me (he believed it would crash my phone to have both cydia and installer on at the same time). My phone is crashing anyway with cydia, so I thought installer might be another option and would like to know how to put it on without ruining the phone. I've tried one method mentioned that came in the form of a zip file, but the instructions didn't work...(whenever I tried to extract a file that has a .app and a folder that ends in .app - winrar freaks out) so I'm looking at doing it via the pawn software.

3rdly. I'm sure we've all been in this situation before.. but if worse comes to worse and I have to restore factory defaults and repawn, is there anyway of doing this without losing all the data or a few short cuts that people know of? My phone is fully loaded with contacts/calendars and programs.. this is a last option for me - (hoping there is a way to snapshot the phone without the use of itunes). Man I hate that program.

4thly, after jailbreaking my iphone... I'm not sure if it was my imagination, but I did it a few months after I moved to a new city. After I jailbroke it, the GPS has not been the same. If has difficulty finding me, I end up all over the map and it seems to die in the ass if I listen to music at the same time. (application crashes). I've tried xGPS which is a fan-f*cking-tastic program, but it suffers from the same problem, trouble finding me and off tracking. Would jailbreaking my phone really interfere with the GPS, or is that more to do with the 3G network in my city?

Lastly, can anyone post a url that is the "definitive" and easiest instructions so a newbie like me can rejailbreak his phone. With all the different programs and options... I just want to know which one is the definitive program with all assurances that it will work. I'm so confused with all this redsnow/yellowsnow - heh. For the record, I'm on a PC, have a 3G iphone 16GB. And thats all I know (as a newbie)

Guys, I know there is a lot there and for those of you who have taken the time to read it, or able to just guide me partway there, I really thank you. I feel stuck with this and appreciate any answers or views that could help.

    Cheers, and kind regards,

    SINC

Ah another victim falls into the mindless endless fidgeting required to keep your little toy phone going. Where you need to spend 3 days and undergo circus training to figure out how to cut and paste.

Sorry to say there is no short cuts.
There are just hours of time spent reading thru hundreds of thousands of posts to find the answers.
And at the end of the tunell you anyway just bend over and give it up to itunes and Mr. Steve

For cydia. Hook up to the net thru wifi/3G the best way you can and update all the stuff that needs updating.

sorry you will loose stuff. Unless your willing to spend a few hours learning new tricks and itunes is the only backup route you got. That will work somewhat.

    All the best mate.
Please dont come back and say your wifi dont work. Cause I will then cry.

Smile Now my Wifi Don't work - LOL - Some Solutions...

LOL - WNJunkie - you rock! hah.. thanks for the response man, and I appreciate where you are coming from. I found that sometimes asking questions can lead to finding out answers a little quicker and then helps bypass a lot of time wasting - and at the moment, my partner is going to beat me over the head with a leg of lamb with how much time i've already wasted reading up and looking for clues...on the bright side though, there is some good news.

Yesterday I had a spare moment to myself (which is rare) and I decided to start looking into the repositorys (from here on now known as suppositories) :-) After deleting the first 2 - POOF! there came the 9 new updates via cydia and the crashing stopped. One of the repos must of been corrupted and stopped cydia from being able to see updates and causing the crashing etc... so from there I notified about the crucial cydia update and the rest is history. There are 1 or 2 repos that it is still complaining about, but i'll need to find out which ones they are... but as it stands, I was able to update cydia and continue updating and installing my apps again. YAY. Although I can't avoid it for ever, I won't be needing to do a re-install (its just the timing right now couldn't have been more shitty. I'm going to wait until apple releases its next big update before even letting that cross my mind.

Anyway WN - i thought i'd share that good news with you - the comment on the wifi cracked me up. I also may have an answer to the GPS question - which may just be relative to my country/state. I have a friend who had just bought an iphone and put both units side by side, jailbroken vs original state - activated google maps on both, and they seemed to do the same thing. I'm hoping that means its the 3G network and not the jailbreaking.

The thing is WN, i use to be PPC owner and managed to hack and crack my way quite easily - reading articles and learning about my HTC and screwing around the registry was pretty straight forward compared to learning about the iphone and all these convoluted work-arounds with conflicting posts. I think thats what it is doing my head in. heh - well,I'll keep on reading, and keep my fingers crossed that i've helped someone here too, or that someone may have an answer to any of my un-answered questions.

Cheers my friend, no need to cry now... well, maybe just a little... cause I still don't understand how to unzip these files. or can find info about repawning an already pawned phone to add installer on.

Download Installer 4 and Install It on Your iPhone and iPod Touch | Funky Space Monkey

if anyone can explain how to extract these files without getting the "there is already a file with the same name as the folder you specified, specify a different name" dialog box on my PC, and then getting that into the phone without WinSCP complaining I'd bare your children. TWICE. LOL

    Cheers, SINC
