Company gave me iphone 3G....
So I had a company issued iphone 3G for some time now which works great. We were recently laid off, totally sucks right now, and they allowed me to keep the phone though they took the sim card back and did a wipe on the phone and canceled the line.
I have a personal ATT account and an active sim card to which I installed it onto the iphone but didn't work, the phone portion that is. My sim card is very old, from the original ATT days. I've read that I need the new type of sim card to work on the iphone, the one with the 3G on it.
I called ATT and rep states that I need to get on a new plan since my current plan is on the old network.
So now I need assistance as to what my options are as I don't wish to go onto a new plan since my old plan is so much better and costs less than what's offered currently.
So a few questions I have:
1. Is there a way to use my old sim card on the iphone?
2. What do I need to do to use the iphone, jailbreak, etc?
If anyone has any thoughts/suggestions, please share.
Thanks

Hi, welcome to the forum
Start reading this iSeminar - The Beginner's Guide to iPhone Hacking [UPDATED] and look for a good tutorial here How to Unlock the iPhone 3G
"Before you can follow these instructions you must have a jailbroken iPhone and you must be on the 02.28.00 baseband(modem firmware). This means that you must be running the 2.2 firmware or have used PwnageTool(NOT QUICKPWN) to install 2.2.1 without upgrading the baseband"
Good luck!
BTW, thread moved to the 3G General section

Thanks for the help and for the links...
However, I'm trying to find out if I can use the 3G iphone with my current sim card and if not, how can I still get a 3G sim card without changing my plan...
The links are very useful for those who wish to jailbreak, unlock, etc. but for those that don't, it doesn't have any info on how to do so...It might be that there is no other way but I haven't been able to confirm it just yet...
Thanks

I'm sure that if you already have a contract with AT&T, they'll give you one of the new SIM cards for free. Just take your iPhone in to a store and tell them that your old SIM card isn't working. I don't see it being too much of a problem.

I do have a ATT plan but its a very old plan on their "old network"...If I walk into a store and ask for a sim card for the iphone, they will require me to get on a new plant to be on their "new network"...I was informed of this when I spoke to a rep on the phone...
Besides, I'd like to somehow use my current plan with the iphone...

What he said was just ask for a replacement SIM on your old account. It will be a new SIM that should work in the iPhone.
He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.

Let me see if I can make this any clearer...
I have the old type sim card which they don't make anymore which is on their old network...In order to get a new sim card, I'll have to re-up on a new plan to be on the new network; the new sim card will not work on the old network...
Now, is there a way to use the old sim card on the iphone?

Just call them and tell them that you've misplaced your sim card or your phone and that you need a new sim urgently. If they ask if you lost the phone, say you misplaced it in the house, but you are leaving for a trip abroad and need a new sim ASAP.
Maybe you'll be able to catch a non quick-thinking operator which will replace your simcard without changing your plan.

Walked into a corp store and told them I had issues with my sim card...The rep was going to give me the new type of sim card but the system didn't allow it as it didn't allow the migration since I'm on the old network...
So even if a slow thinking phone rep doesn't catch it, the system will not allow the new 3g sim card to be placed onto my existing account...

Is there a way to trick the iphone 3G in thinking there is a 3G sim card installed eventhough the sim card used is on the old network???
