Default [Carrier Sim lock] is it a hardware or software thing ?

apparently some countries are selling otb iphone 3g that are not locked to any specific networks.... (honk kong and italy) for example.

My question is,is this a hardware difference between the sim locked phones and the non-sim locked phones? or is it a software thing (itunes checks the imei and and determines this phone should be de-simed)?

if it is software based... should that mean that by looking into a "unlocked" phone, someone would be able to figure out what needs to be done to unlock all phones?

I would think the phones are software SIM-locked. That's why unlocking is possible by finding exploits etc etc..

I dont know how they can make it hardware SIM-locked o_o
anyway, they wouldnt do that since there are most likely the same type of components in each phone.

    but what do i know : )

I don't think there is a way to hardware SIM lock a phone, short of physically soldering the SIM card in. It's all done in software, just like with the last iPhone.

Granted, there are ways of SIM unlocking a phone through hardware, but that doesn't mean that the lock itself is a hardware feature.

the lock is 100% software since you don't have to modify the board inside the phone to make in unlocked... try to search next time this has been discused a lot...

Check out the turbo sim section - one guy claims it works with 3G and has posted pics for proof.

The guy has been a reputable seller here so would doubt its a scam
