    Default Carrier settings update?

I just plugged my AT&T iphone 3G on T-Mobile with a *sim in to sync and a box popped up and it said something along the lines of "iTunes would like to check for carrier settings updates" not firmware carrier settings.

I have never seen anything like this with my 2g iphone.

    What is it?

Can we use these settings from an officially unlocked phone to unlock our locked phones?

Not for unlock, these settings mostly for SMS center, APN settings, number formatting and so on... so general carrier settings.
