Default Can I jailbreak an officially unlocked iphone 3G (Brazil/France)?

I have a legally unlocked iphone 3G 16GB from Brazil. It was unlocked via itunes after my requesting so from the carrier (Vivo)

I would like to jailbreak it, mainly in order to run frings over 3G and thus making cheap calls from Brazil to the US or to Brazilian land lines.

Now I wonder, the unlock depends on a special firmware download? Being that the firmware downloaded for Pwnage would not be unlocked? Please explain!!

So I have to chose: either jail break or unlock?

If so, after a jailbreak, can I always reset the phone via itunes, if I want to have it originally unlocked as before?

Just some curiosity: nobody managed to copy whatever apple does to unlock iphones via itunes? some packet sniffer or man in the middle in the itunes usb connecting cable? Probably there is some strong encryption and some imei dependent information in there?

You can use Quickpwn to jailbreak the iPhone and get Installer/Cydia on it.

from my rudimentary understanding, apple probably loads some special version of the firmware or a patch to unlock the iphone.

From my rudimentary understanding, jailbreaking uses a standard firmware and patches it somehow.

So it is quite likely that this will lock the iphone, that it will undo the official unlock

Of course people with deeper theoretical understanding or actual practice would know better.

Where are the experts? or the Brazilians or French?

Again, use quickpwn to Jailbreak your iPhone. You have to download Apples Firmware 2.1 for 3G iPhone aswell, a link is here:
    http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=22056

Once Apple comes up with a firmware update one day and you update/restore to it, the iPhone will still be unlocked but no longer jailbroken.

iPhone 3G int. unlocked (2.1; jailbroken with PwnageTool 2.1, SSH, Installer, Cydia) 16 GB
oh, you yourself do have an international officially unlocked iphone and unlocked it with Pwnage? so you are a living witness that this really works?

I already downloaded Pwnage, but I can try to read up on Quickpwn instead, if that is better.

Even if you confirm all this, I still would love if you could give some pointers as how the official legal unlock works, and why the same unlock procedure can not be copied and hacked for use for an unofficial unlock.

Wow, again. Yes it works. There are many users here.

I recommend using Quickpwn, easier and faster for your request (jailbreak only)

Completely different story. The unlock happens after your iPhone is listed as "factory unlocked" on Apples servers (in your case the carrier initiated the process). If it could be copied, it would have done a while ago. It can not be used for an unofficial unlock. There are some hardware details that are checked, among other stuff. Check the forum, the question has been asked several times before.

The official unlock is accomplished by one tiny command.
    Code:
    AT+CLCK=”PN”,0,”00000000″
The problem here is that those zeros need to be replaced with your actual unique unlock code, and you only get 5 guesses before your phone is perma-locked (point of no return).

A lot of people who have no idea what the hell they're talking about go around pleading for people to log the official unlock process. As can be seen clearly based on the information above, that would effectively only accomplish two things: jack and shit.

I don't know where you get the idea that an officially unlocked iPhone uses different firmware.

...and, generally, for the future, people with a "rudimentary understanding" don't challenge people who actually know what they're talking about. You don't want to piss off people who can help you, because then they won't.

In South Africa the Iphones are unlocked. When I updated to newer firmware, it was locked for a few moments but unlocked itself the moment I connected it to Itunes. I had no problem when I used Quickpwn and Pwnage. I am sure it will be the same for officially unlocked Brazil phones.
