[Advice] Official Carrier Unlock Procedure
Hi,
I have placed my request for the carrier unlock (Australia - Optus). They say it takes up to 10 days and I will have to restore my phone in iTunes after that. Then I will get a message saying the phone is no longer locked to any carrier.
The request form the carrier goes to Apple. Apple sends you unlocked firmware via iTunes specifically for your IMEI.
How do I know when the update is ready for my phone? Do I get a message in iTunes saying it's ready or should I restore every day for the next 10 days?
Anyone know?

You will most likely get some sort of contact, mail, phones etc. Or maybe it will tell you once you sync your phone with itunes.
Don't worry just connect your iphone after ten days if you dont hear anything. I have never heard of this sort of unlocking before, because in the uk they dont sell unlocked iphones.
I dont know anything for sure but this is my guess.

Hopefully someone will figure out what's up with that special firmware and make it available to everyone by modifying the stock firmware

There is no special firmware...
Your IMEI is just being registered on a apple server as being unlocked. Itunes checks on these servers every time you do a restore whether you IMEI is on that list or not...
If it is, your iPhone will be unlocked by iTunes...

You do not actually restore, just connecting and syncing, it checks for the unlock. I am assuming the procedure is the same as it was in France, my unlock was ready in 3 days, one day a message popped up in itunes telling me I was unlocked. In French of course......

I have an officially unlocked French phone. The unlock was reapplied by itunes when I updated to 2.0. Now I just need a jailbreak working....

Hi,
I bought 3G iphone pre-paid at an Optus shop and got the same info from Optus. First you have to activate your iphone with address details and driving license etc. (...so they can send you the $80 invoice for the unlocking...). Once activated you know your interim phone number and you than place the request with Optus to unlock the phone. This is what I did yesterday and they send the "unlock request". As per Optus this will take 10 days. During this <<waiting time>> you get the invoice. Pay it and than you regularly connect to iTunes which at one stage will say something like "...your phone has been unlocked...'. That should than be all.
Once I'm at this stage I'll provide more feedback.
Cheers

Thank You Steve!
