Then you are knowingly in receipt of stolen property.
It is against the rules of this forum to discuss or engage in any activities that are criminal/illegal.
You won't find any help here with your problem.
My advice - contact the police and notify them that you received an iPhone that was likely stolen. In most countries if no-one claims the stolen property after a period of time then the police often will ask if you want to claim it from them for free. Otherwise it just takes up storage space in a police office.

I restored my iphone without any sim card in it. On screen, there is a dialogue box saying "No sim card installed insert a valid sim with no pin lock to activate phone". The background shows a cable connecting to itunes and it will only let me make emergency calls. I was wondering if someone could tell me how to get at least to the home screen so i can do stuff to fix it. Right now i cannot do anything exept restore it over and over. Please email me soon at theoriginalmdhd@aol.com if you have any idea.

If it is a 3G iPhone - you can use redsn0w to hacktivate it.
Otherwise if you want legitimate activation - you either need a SIM from the carrier the iPhone is locked to or a PhoneBook SIM that has a generic ICCID.

i have the same problem as the rest of you... so basically the way to bypass this message is to obtain a sim card from that phone's carrier and insert it in, and it should work, right?
i bought a 3g off my friend and it is locked to his carrier, Fido. if i borrow someone's sim card from Fido and plug it into my 3g, it will bypass the "insert valid sim with no pin lock" message?
and Olethros, are you saying that i can use redsn0w to get rid of this message? because i thought you have to be on the home screen in order to use any jailbreaking tool.

The requirement that you have to be on the home screen only applies to userland jailbreaks - Spirit and jailbreakme.
On a 3G (or 2G) you can always hacktivate with redsn0w or pwnagetool.
The iPhone 2G and 3G, iPod Touch 1st and early 2nd gen are pwned for life. That means that they can always be jailbroken if you use the right jailbreaking tool.
There are some advantages to legitimately activating with a fido sim.
If you jailbreak and hacktivate with redsn0w or pwnagetool then you should use pushdoctor to install valid push certificates.

Did you get it fixed? I have the exact same problem, have an iPhone 3G had the chip to used it with a different SIM card but when I did the update I got the message "INSERT VALID SIM" and now nothing works. How can I fix it. I am not in Canada anymore, so no chance of inserting a FIDO Sim!

Redsn0w will fix this on a 3G - for iOS 4.0.x use 0.9.5-b5 for 3.1.x use 0.9.2
