Default [3rd party accessories] iphone 3G not charging...

    Hi !

I just recently upgraded from 2G to 3G.
Happy so far except one thing:

I have a lot of 3rd party stuff that connects via Dock Connector ( Boom Boom Box, 2 kinds of Car Kits, ... ).

Obviously all those acc. result in the famuous Dialog telling my the acc. was not made for the iPhone bla bla...
    Still all works fine, BUT:
I noticed that all acc. that used to charge the 2G do not charge the iPhone 3G !!!!
If the phone is locked while connecting there even is a big fat icon telling you so.

This is pretty annoying as i never had to charge my iPhone before as i use it in my car every day.

Is there a hardware or software fix to this, i mean: "$%damn it, its 5V, no extra magic to it, where's the Problem of charging the 3G ???

I would really appreciate help and/or insights to this stupid problem...

And if nothing else helps: Are there apple approved car chargers that do the trick ( yay, one more charger in my car, adding to the 2 zillion others )...

    Greetings,

    Ender

Dude google is your friend. There are literally hundreds of articles about this issue and you could have probably found your answer in a fraction of the time it took to post and wait (days?) for a reply...

But anyways, the reason your chargers and accessories or whatnot aren't charging your phone is because the 3G no longer supports charging via the (12v) firewire pins which is unfortunately the method many accessories used to provide power to the 2G and previous gen iPods.

Basically, only your chargers and accessories which provide (5v) USB power will charge your 3G...

Are you absolutely sure that ur "5v equipment" that used to charge ur 2G actually did provide power via 5v and not the 12v firewire pins?

What I have been trying to tell you is that the difference between the 2G iPhone and the 3G iPhone is that the 2G supports charging via BOTH the 5v usb pins AND the 12v firewire pins. The 3G supports ONLY charging via the 5v usb pins.

So by logic, if your "5v equipment" used to charge your 2G but don't charge your 3G then the problem is one of three things, either:

    1) You have a faulty 3G - Unlikely but connect your 3G to your laptop/computer via USB cable. Does it charge? If it does, then your 3G is fine. Your equipment/accessories are not.

    2) You have faulty equipment - VERY VERY unlikely. You mentioned in your first post that your accessories/equipment have full functionality except for the charging. There is no way that your so-called "5v equipment" have ALL lost the ability to charge your phone.

    3) Your "5v equipment" is not really 5v equipment - This is most likely the problem as I have been trying to tell you. It's simple cause and effect. The effect is that the accessories that used to charge your 2G no longer charge your 3G. What caused it is therefore the difference between the 2G and 3G I have mentioned so many times. To quote myself again "the 2G supports charging via BOTH the 5v usb pins AND the 12v firewire pins. The 3G supports ONLY charging via the 5v usb pins".

The accessories you thought were 5v are actually 12v. 2G supports 12v. 3G does not. This is why your 3G no longer charges.

I hope this has been helpful...

    Hi !

Woah, yes that has been helpful,
i totally got it wrong, i was thinking the 2G had the same charging capabilities as the 3G so i thought "what is this guy talking about"...
    But now its clear !

Arghhh that means i probably have to rebuy a lot of stuff and get used to the idea of having an empty iPhone now and then again...

    Thanks for your patience :-)
