I'd exercise some caution, especially when they say stuff like "we really doubt it would do anything a restore couldn’t fix but stranger things have happened" while the baseband firmware or its internal data is never touched by a restore

If they're really serious about this, shouldn't they have like 3-4 phones each they can test on? I'm kinda guessing that's what you have in the dev team, in case something goes wrong you have multiple phones to play around and test things on?

IMEI
Serial #
Country
Current Carrier
WTF? Maybe if they said what they needed this info for it would seem less suspect.

What are the chances that a new team has come up with a 3G unlock in only weeks when the experienced Dev Team that has been hacking iPhones for over a year is still working on it?
The first signal that something was wrong is right in this guys first post. He says he wants to sniff the official unlock process. Even I know that such data is useless, and i've never written a line of code in my life. Where does that put him?

We've been working in the dark and we figured it was about time we came out and started talking as we're moving forward at a much faster pace than we imagined so we opened a blog:

we also wanted to seek any help we could get; we understand many of you are in countries where the law dictates that apple must unlock iphone's sold there so we are soliciting your help! Anyone who is about to unlock their iphone officially, please email us first. We've designed some software we'd like you to run to find out exactly what's going on during the unlock.

It seems everyone has forgotten that the dev team never created the Unlock for the 1st gen iPhone I know I will be flamed for saying this but lets not forget iPhone Sim Free. THEY came up with the unlock and the dev team copied it. I love the dev team but I'm not holding my breathe for a 3G unlock they have never unlocked the phone without the help of others. I know eveyrone hates IPSF but lets give other teams a shot. The dev team is fantastic but lets not forget that IPSF was flamed because people thought it was a scam/fake which it wasn't. It was actually the best unlock for the 1st gen iPhone (way better than anysim/ziphone) until PWNAGE was released. So lets not be hypercritical and give the other underdogs a chance. IPSF asked for this EXACT SAME INFORMATION LITERALLY EXACT when they were testing and distributing their solution. I know it was so you couldn't use the software twice but even so. Thanks dev team for the hard work but I'm sure they wouldn't mind a little help these days.

I totally agree on what you said. But the point is, and so far many teams are claiming the unlock and yet all turn to be scams.
They all post an announcement, many do give them support, to end up with no updates. I believe all teams have a good chance to create the unlock, and am also sure that many will support extra efforts from anyone, but at least let those who are claiming the unlock, post some updates and physical evidence the way the DEV is doing. Am also sure that the DEV won't mind some help from real hackers not from kiddos.
My 2 Cents

The IPSF unlock was first, but the dev team certainly did not copy it. The devteam anySIM unlock is completely unlike the IPSF unlock.
IPSF hacked the tokens (data).
devteam hacked the baseband (code).
(That difference is also why IPSF doesn't work on 2G iPhones with the 4.6 bootloader, but the devteam hack still does.)
