Default [3G] Need some advice from Australians

I'm making a trip to Australia soon, and thought I might pick up an officially unlocked iPhone while I'm down. I'd like your help in answering a couple of questions.

I know that the iPhone is available from Optus, Telstra, Virgin and Vodafone. But, are there any differences in cost or obligations from one carrier to the other? Will all of them sell it and unlock it for the same price? I heard a rumor that only Optus will unlock it, but I find that to be suspect.

Here's what I've heard; correct me if I'm wrong:

    $850 iPhone 16GB
    $80 unlock
    10% GST
    =$1023AUS

I think I might be wrong on the taxes and I believe tax is refundable as a tourist, which should save me some money. But I'd like an expert opinion from someone who's done it or knows someone who's done it.

    greatly appreciated.

If i'm not wrong, there's no more stock for pre-paid services. only post-paid ones.

Really? Same iPhone, but they've limited how many pre-paid phones they can sell? Any idea if it's a temporary thing?

    Wink

I know for a fact you can pop into the apple shop in george st sydney, or any Telstra shop that stocks the iphone and request to buy one outright.

I know that all providers are supplying outright iphones for exactly the same price so there is not much difference who you get one from.

I went into the main Telstra shop in the middle of brisbane and requested one outright as I already have an account with them under contract.

One pre-requisite with the telstra shop is that you must have an existing Telstra Mobile account.

A pre-paid account is ok and u can usually pick up starter packs for about $30 or $2 for sim only (no credit)

As for unlocking, I'm not sure but i think Telstra charges more than what has been quoted here. I think its about $150.

Called up the Apple Store. They only sell on contract. Will try one of the other stores. I've heard that Optus is $80 for an unlock, so I guess I'll try there first.

Thanks for the info. Looking forward to coming over. This is just the icing on the cake.

Just drag the videos into iTunes then select them in the video tab under iPhone when its connected then sync the phone. If they work on an iPod they should work on the iPhone.
    Good luck

you cannot drag and drop to iPhone, you must sync it to add files to it.
    Open iTunes.
    Plug in your phone
after it comes up on the left click on your phone
then there are tabs across the top of the window in iTunes
Click each tab untill you see the video list
check the box to sync videos and click the ones you want to sync
then just click sync and wait till it finishes the sync
now all the vids you checked should be on the phone.
    Good luck
