Hey it's not so simple..
The only way to check if a an iPhone is officially unlocked (ie factory unlocked) is to*restore the OS and then see if iTunes will activate it with any SIM card (for example a SIM card from a carrier that does not sell iPhones). There is a risk that by restoring if it is NOT officially unlocked, you might update the baseband to a version that cannot be unofficially unlocked.
to see if it is jailbroken - look for Cydia, or blackra1n app or see if you can browse the whole filesystem via iPhone browser, iFunBox or DiskAid. There is no single sign that your iPhone is jailbroken - it depends very much on what tools were used to jailbreak.

I had the same problem, and got the recommendation to restore to a
nonactivated custom-firmware (so NOT the org Apple version). That way you
cirumvent the problem of an unwanted baseband upgrade.
If after the restore, iTunes activates your phone, then it is supposedly
factory unlocked, that is the imei is stored as such on Apples server(s).
Good luck ! Don't know if posting the link to the nonactivated custom
firmwares would be appropriate, so I you can't find anything, PM me...

This is correct (and safer) than what I originally proposed. You still need to use a SIM card from a different carrier/country though.
It is also correct that sharing custom IPSW is not approved on this forum. The OP should make their own (preferably with PwnageTool)
