Nobody ever asked me if I was a resident or not.
I have received the e-mail after 4 days and unlocked it.
If you have any other doubt let me know
In time, in my case the address on their sistem was the orange store address
thank you for the info guys
In my case, I have a permanent address there, but I'm not there all the time. I'll be doing it within the month, and will let you know here if it worked.

Just to make sure this will work with any sim over the world? and do you have to wait 48 hours before asking for the unlock?

If anyone needs any additional info, I wiil be available as usual
P.S. I did the official unlock in London via itunes restore, so it can be done anywhere even outside France.
An update from me as well. I've unlocked my phone (before receiving the confirmation email from Orange - but it worked) using the Restore option in iTunes. It works fine so far with no apparent glitch. Works on 3G, data is ok, GPS is ok (as bad as it is), calls are fine, ipod great. So I'm a happy monkey.
I have performed the unlock from Romania, so there should not be a restriction on that. Regarding the SIM, I guess that since before my Orange Romania card was not working and now is it should be the same with any SIM card. Worth mentioning that after the restore I have activated the phone with the Orange France SIM and then switched to the Romanian one. Worked like a charm.
So good luck to the ones awaiting for the unlock and happy user experience
just wondering, the phones that are factory unlocked what do they say in the back? like the phone in US it says designed by apple in california. does the 3g factory unlocked phone from france and else where say the same or something help? thanks
My iphone says designed by apple in California, assembled in China.

I assume this is how it works since on the orange unlock instructions we have to make an unlock via itunes restore, having an internet connection necessarily. The device therefore comunicates with apple database which woud send sort of an internal unlock code. This would also explain why orange requires you to wait at least 48 hours to receive the unlocking e-mail.
But mind you, this is just a guess. I am not an expert:hack:
I had no problems. Bought the 16 gb version. Immediately phoned in (702) and asked for the unlock. It arrived via email after 2 days, see below. What it says is to back up and restore the iphone to the original settings via itunes and it is unlocked. In my case it downloaded version 2,1 first. After this it was unlocked. I'm using it now in another country.
