    I am writing from Paris

You can buy a pre paid iphone from Orange dealer

8gb costs 509 and 16 gb costs 609. But foreigners are entitled to a tax return of 13% over those prices. You do not need to be a French resident ( I am not) for the prepaid option. All they ask is for your passport or a government ID.

You can unlock (it is legit) the iphone after 48 hours providing you buy a recharge of EU 100 buy calling orange assistance (dial 722 from the iphone)

I have bought a 16 gb 3g iphone, bought the recharge, activated it via itunes and called orange today to ask for the unlock. After some data checking like personal details and IMEi number, they have confirmed the unlock and will send me the codes to do it in 48 hours.

Total price after the tax return - EU 609

I will revert as soon as I confirm the unlock, but it looks consistent to me since I have heard the same procedure on 2 different orange stores (Champs Elise and Madlaine)

Exclamation Additional advice when Buying in France

Please note that when you buy the EU 100 recharge credit, you cannot spend it since it will be used by Orange as a charge for the unlocking !!!

    So the best practice is

    1. Buy the iphone and the EU 100 recharge
    2. Activate it via itunes
    3. Register the credit under your Orange account opened when you bought the iphone.
    4. Wait 48 hours without using the iphone. Just leave it off.
    5. After 48 hours, turn your iphone on, dial 722 and then option 9 and ask for the unlock.
    6. Only after that you can use the phone with the remaining credit.

Failure to follow those steps will cause the need to buy another EU 100 recharge credit.

Default France vs Australia for unlocked iPhones

You can buy a prepaid 8gb iphone for eu 409 and a 16gb for 509 aproximately. This price is after the tax return (13%) every foreigner is entitled.

There is no need to be a French resident. They will only ask you to provide a passport or federal id. It can be unlocked to any carrier if you buy a recharge of Eu 100. After 2 days you can call orange assistance ( dial 722 from the iphone) and ask for an unlock which codes will be sent in 48 hours by e-mail.

I have bought a 16 gb. It looks consistent to me since this info was confirmed by two different Orange store assistants. It has cost me therefore EU 609. I have already asked for the unlock.

I will write again as soon as I confirm it is unlocked.
In Australia Pre-Paid iPhones are around A$730 (Eu 420) for 8GB and A$850 (Eu 491) for 16GB from OPTUS

They can be unlocked after a recharge of A$80 (Eu 46) - you buy 1x$50 and 1x$30 recharge card.

After the unlock you can use up the $80 call credit, or give the SIM away, or sell it to an Aussi or a back packer at a discount.

Total for 8GB Eu 466 less anything you get for selling the pre-paid SIM with credit.

Total for 16GB Eu 537 less anything you get for selling the pre-paid SIM with credit.

I have not counted any refund of the Australian 10% Goods and Services Tax - I don't think it is easily claimed.

I think your best bet may be HK.

I know I am trying to get mine from there

Good luck with that. I was there August 9th to August 22nd. No Luck!

You can get one from one of the small shops around Mongkok, but they want BIG money. Much more than the cost of the iPhone plus unlock charge in Australia.

And, of course, you can't get one from Hutcherson/Three without a two year contract - there are no Pre-Paid iPhones in Hong Kong (unlike France and Australia).

    Hi Guys,

I am not sure if all the information provided in this thread is accurate. For example, the advice to shut off your phone for 2 days so that you don't spend the credit looks a bit awkward. Orange France gives you 50 EUR extra credit with a recharge of 100 EUR, so in theory you could spend up to 50 EUR and still be able to order the unlock. The other bit is that after you order the unlock the 100 EUR is immediately discounted so no chance of further using them. This has been verified by me on my account details on www.orange.fr.

And now we come to the info provided by Orange themselves. I've heard several versions so far, 24 hrs, 48 hrs, at least 48hrs, 10-15 days. I am serious. Unfortunately not a lot of Orange FR call center staff speak English and the ones that do, well, do not seem to be all that bright. I have ordered my unlock on Thursday morning. Now it's Saturday evening and no news (that would be 60 hrs).

The experience I've had with Orange FR was horrible and if I never have to speak to them again it would be too soon. For you non-French speakers using the French connection, arm yourselves with a lot of patience. You're gonna need it. I will get back here once I solve the unlock and will tell you how it went.

    Cheers.

It is true you get 150 euros credit, but with roaming costs for push, internet, email, etc (remember you are in Paris) you can spend a whole lot of it very quick. Besides that beware of the minute cost for prepaid plans from Orange. My credit was spent real quick!!

Concerning the time to send the unlock codes, the last info I had was 1 to 6 business days. In any case I still have not received mine.

I will revert as soon as I receive it

    @skymau

You are right about the costs, the credit can run out pretty quickly. But still, once you order the unlock the 100 EUR are discounted and you should be safe. Anyway, I hope they put their s**t together and solve my unlock. Excuse my ignorance, but I can't see why the update can take so long. Unless it's done manually, in which case shame on them. Keep in touch.
