Default [3G] [2.0.2] iPhone 3G - can we update and keep baseband?

    Hello all,

I have a USA (AT&T locked) 8Gb iPhone 3G currently on firmware 2.0.0 with baseband 01.45.00. I have been hesitant to update to 2.0.2 as I dont want to update my baseband in the fear that it might lessen any future DevTeam unlock that may appear.

I have a PC as well as a Hackintosh so can use either Pwn tool. It is not clear in either GUI, so can anyone please confirm whether I can create my own new custom 2.0.2 using either tool and KEEP the baseband at my current 2.0.0 one (ie NOT update from 01.45 to 01.48 or even higher?

Have looked at the 2.5beta of WinPan as well as 2.0.3.1 of Mac PwnTool and cant seem to confidently see this ability. Scared to try without come confirmation in case it DOES update baseband and I cant go back down.

Would appreciate any first hand experience? Please post firmware, baseband as well as the app used?

    Many thanks!

Please note that this question is for the 3G model not the 2G where I know baseband can be kept.

just use Pwnage Tool to create a custom IPSW and disable the baseband update. I can assure u that this is featured in the latest pwnage tool using expert mode. I dont know about winpwn tho. I havent used it

Pwnge tool will NOT upgrade the baseband unless you actually go into Expert Mode and CHANGE the setting.

If you run Pwnage tool in noob mode the baseband remains unchanged.

If you updated and your baseband went UP (ie you did an 'official' update and not a Pwn one) then you could try making a Pwn'd firmware whcih will have the older baseband in it. Try to do a restore and see if it will go back down. Would partition wipe out ON have any bearing and make it a 'more complete' restore? Probably not as AFAIK that is just for partitions and not the Apple firmware. But no hard in trying.

If it does not go back down, then you might be stuck and in the same place I was scared of being in my earlier posts, which led to my hesitancy.

One can only hope that the DevTeam's unlock (which I know doesnt yet exist but we have faith!) can work on the newer basebands, or you might have to go down the SIM-unlock route....

there is youtube video of some polish guy Sebastian. He says in comments made 3g custom f**ware with some baseband files from 2g. He says it works until phone uses internet.

I am not sure that can be a correct claim on his part? The 2G phone uses a totally different modem so how can the baseband be used interchangeably? Doesnt the new phone use a totally different modem hardware (which allows it to go 3G)?

dude.... wtf..... making a custom firmware using pwnage tool or winpwn wont downgrade a 3G baseband..... ever.... thats not possible yet only dev team dowgraded iphone 3G baseband to an older beta firmware baseband.... but ...as of now... no one knows how they accomplished that. Partition wipe is not a "more complete restore" it is just a Zero out data applied to the partition before installing the new firmware.
