If it is a 3G then you can simply shift-restore or shift-upgrade via iTunes to 3.1.2

Remember that Spirit requires that you can get past the "slide for emergency" screen before it can jailbreak your iPhone. This requires a SIM card that iTunes will accept for activation.

After you restore the iPhone, it restart and will be stuck at a "slide for emergency screen" - then you insert your SIM card (if not already inserted) and iTunes will detect the iPhone, ask the iPhone to check that the SIM card is from the carrier the iPhone is locked to and request an activation code from Apple. When that activation code when installed on your iPhone - the springboard is displayed and you can use the iPhone as normal.

If you are with a legitimate carrier and you leave the iPhone connected via USB and iTunes running - this all happens automatically.

Many people who want to unlock - don't realise they also need to get past this activation step first. Spirit does not bypass the activation step. Other jailbreaks (like redsn0w) can bypass the activation step.

None of this is relevant to you - as you have AT&T contract. You did ask for a clarification though.
