Default Why I think the new firmware won't re-lock the iPhone.

We all know that Apple signed an agreement with AT&T...breaking it would result in a lawsuit...unlocking the iPhone was the best thing that could happen to Apple. In the media they're against it...behind closed doors, they're jumping for joy. They're making a TON of money from this.

If it's relocked, I'm sure it'll be just as easy for the dev team to unlock it again...be that they flash the baseband down to whatever it used to be and start over or...something along those lines.

I for one will be more than happy to volunteer my iPhone for testing, that's the only reason I bought it, it's not even activated...just unlocked. Take care. Thanks for reading.

im sure that the new version will overwrite the previous baseband but something else has come to my mind.
wasn´t the baseband only patched in order to set the phone to "unlocked" and therefore the patched baseband wouldn´t be needed anymore anyways?

so, all unlocked phones should remain unlocked and only unlocking a phone with the new version wouldn´t work anymore.

could somebody clarify this for me

Haha, as if they're jumping for joy. They get a fair sum of money out of each AT&T monthly bill.

you don't seem to realize that the real way for Apple to make money from the iPhone is by making AT&T, O2, T-Mobile and Orange France hand them over sacks of cash for every minute the users spend on air.
And they can't do that if people use unlocked phones on different carriers. So I'm willing to bet that the next FW version will lock the phone and that it's going to be a real challenge to unlock it again.

Good call...I actually did over look the point of them getting paid per customer....hmmm, that changes things now doesn't it...I feel like an ass...lol

I still think it won't be that bad. Although now that I think about it, they HAVE to make the new firmware relock the phone BECAUSE of the contracts they signed with the carriers....I think it won't be too long before they un lock it again.

Let's hope it's not too long before they crack the new firmware.

Ok... Lets put a little issue to rest here. ATT IS losing some sales because of unlocked iphones... maybe a fiftieth of a percent of sales nationwide. it's nothing. there is a very SMALL percentage of people who will swith from one carrier to another just because of a phone. You don't have to believe me. churn rates because of handsets are published. This is BOOSTING Apple's sales of the iphone. they have thousands of iphones that would be sitting in a warehouse, that are now being shipped all over the world. Lets face it. they wouldn't sell it in the apple store or online to non ATT users if this was not the case. Do they make money for active ATT subscribers? yes. do they make more money now then before ? HELL YES!

As for a new firmware locking the iphone? who's to say... the argument is there either way. As for the hard work of the dev team.... my money is on them to overcome any obstacle thrown there way. Lets take a note out of the battle between sony and the hackers who fought against them with the PSP.

oh yes they will lock it. But I'm sure they won't make it THAT tough for the unlock to happen. The death star will explode again
