    It's just way too expensive.

If you bought one, btw, you need to send it to that country for repairs. So that warranty is pretty much worthless.

Cheapest officially unlocked iPhone is from Orange @ 749 euros. That makes it $1105 USD or $1100 CAD. Then you add the usual eBay profit margin for premium devices such as this of about $200, that's $1300. Then shipping + insurance, or if you're going to cheap out just shipping from France is typically about $100. Unless you want to use regular mail which would take about 4 weeks.

All of that set aside, you won't get an official unlocked version for at least $1400. Unlocking over iTunes is nice but seriously for $1400, you can buy 2 iPhones and still have left over cash.

I would rather have 2 x iPhone software unlocked + extra cash for comfort than 1 official unlocked iPhone that has warranty from a foreign country.

You can buy 2 iPhones by the time you have matched one official unlock.

    Question

Do you guys live in a country where iPhone is available?
    ...I don't.

Did you guys see the 1999 EUR iPhone that I posted a link of?

I rather have an officially unlocked phone instead of that!

    For me, not really.

Apple may not support my iPhone in Canada... but I sure can.

I understand how my iPhone works. It has a 3.9 bootloader and I understand what it's capable and specifically how it can be exploited. If the iPhone breaks, I understand how to erase my firmware and reflash it, for example.

I may not be able to recover from ANY failure (hardware, or just stuff that the community hasn't deciphered yet), but a least I have something.

On the other hand, for $1500 I can said 'official device' and when it breaks, what do I have? No exploitable bootloader and really no way to get in and do my own repair if I have to (yet?).

Best of all, I have no warranty anyways, because it's outside the country of sale.

Makes the 'official' units seem sort of pointless for me as a Canadian user.

I got my 8GB iPhone for $380.00 I have upgraded it from 1.0.2 to 1.1.1 and now 1.1.2.

Why would I want to pay some stupid price for a officially unlocked one??? Mine will never die unless I have a hardware failure - if this happens I can buy an unlocked one off ebay for cheaper still!

As somebody said - the warranty is moot unless you are from the country where the unlocked phone comes from hence only good if your German or French for example and have silly money to burn. I personally would do without the iphone for that amount of money anyhow, the iPhone is a great wonderful device but its not priceless!!

Okay this proves that price is not the reason why officially unlocked iPhones aren't sold on eBay... http://cgi.ebay.de/VIP-Apple-iPhone-...QQcmdZViewItem
