    Great Post RiTch

I totally agree with you, 250,000 ish unlock phones is a lot of revenue to lose and i think when 1.1.3 hits itunes we will all no if apple are "secretly" with us or totally against us by how hard it is to upgrade 3.9 and unlock 4.6 etc.

@Dive: As I said, Apple is a hardware manufacturing company. The revenue thay make out of the Telco-contracts is very clever and welcome. But in the long run it will not stay on. In order to stay competitive with their products, Apple will have to listen to the customers and let them decide how to make use of the products they have paid for.

At this moment the iPhone is a so called "me too" product, a hype that will make people change their service provider... This hype will fade like any hype that has been created in the past. But how long do you think it will take before people will find another phone that enables them to stay with the provider that they are happy with for years. And in who's interest is it when customers will stop buying the iPhone for this reason?

Well it is definately not in the interest of Apple and most certainly not in the interest of AT&T, T-Mobile, O2, or any other service provider...

"Free world" is likely dominate by solo-players(or we can say - money) at this time. That's really not everyone's favorite and I am sure whatever BB will update or not in 1.1.3 or above, smart ones can find their way out. So just be patient and helpful, you will have the chance to call your buddy with a nicely unlocked IP, without ATT or whatever sh*t like carrier name displayed on it.

RiTch! I partially agree with you, but if apple doesn't keep the phone locked wouldn't that cause a problem with their contract with at&t and other carriers?
I m not saying they will give us an unlock, but if they dont release updates that would keep it locked it could cause them legal problems!
You're right that the iphone is on the "me too" hype, and previous unlocks helped on that one.The 4.06 bootloader didn't stop their sales either.iPhone still sells and is on the safe side since the only workaround is a hardware simcard that simulates an AT&T sim.

So if I'm safe and still sell why would I risk releasing a firmware that would make the unlock easier?
    Wouldn't AT&T cause any troubles?

You are all forgetting the third option:

    3. Apple won't release a new firmware.

Apple has done what it intended t do. Put the hacking community and device team in jeopardy. No one can unlock the Iphone 1.1.2 otb. Period. End of story. Apple has achieved a milestone. Why would apple want to introduce a change to the present unlockable firmware? They are not naive nor stupid. If I were Apple, I simply would not change a single thing to the present iphone, bootloader, baseband or firmware. It is us who are stuck not them.

In reality, unless there is some serious competition rising to Dev or Elite team, we will all be stuck where we are. End of story. To come up with a real solution, other people who know about hacking phones need to get involved.

Everytime you get on the #iphone channel at irc.osx86.hu the simplest question is always answered witn NO. You are refferred to google for answers.

With the little knowledge and experience I have, I have been able to help a few people while on the site jailbreak their phones. Simple tools like simPort are denied in the channel. If you dare speak up yo will be kicked out.

Whose side are they on I wonder?

Strangely enough, credibility for anyone claiming to unlock a 1.1.2 otb iphone is undermined. Links are erased. No information is given.

The only option is TurboSIM, an expensive solution which is not even available in most countries. Whose side are they on. Hum, I just think I found the answer, but given this is not my forum, my comment most likely will not last but a few minutes here.

The last option is legislation. If we can convince the legal community, in the countries where the iphone has been released, about the illegality of the exclusivity with AT&T and as a monopoly, we might have better chances at having an open iphone in six months. Just like they did in Germany. Other countries should follow. Even the United States and Canada.

For the time being, we should all enjoy our expensive itouch ipods.

scuti, the thing is a lot of people don't want to change carriers.Very few know of the Turbosim and those who do had to search to reach this forums and read about it.
So the majority out there knows these:
Old iphone = can use my provider by unlocking it(they dont even bother to DIY, they buy a software)
New iphone = specific carrier with expensive plan

So given the facts, less people are like to change their carriers for the iphone!
The hype is already dying and its mostly because of the 4.06 bootloader. And as hype dies, sales die along!
No sales = no money = no happy
