What does 1.1.1 jailbreak mean for 1.1.1 unlock?
Given the just-released news, what does jailbreaking do to help unlocking 1.1.1? I know it will take time, but does having jailbroken 1.1.1 necessarily mean an unlock can be done?

Well in order to unlock you need to Jailbreak first.

After jailbreak, we can run App on 1.1.1, so a good chance to get
secpack file for new baseband firmware.

Mikewen,
isn't the secpack what they need to erase the version 4 baseband and downgrade to the previous one that can be unlocked with anysim (provided you downgraded to 1.0.2 of course)?
I REALLY want to downgrade this extra phone I have I love 1.02

after reading from TUAW, i am guessing...
with new jailbreak for 1.1.1, they should able to "activate" the phone without signing up with at&t. and you should able to TurboSIM like before....
and software unlock should be next. we are going via the same process again

I'm hoping it's sooner rather than later, I've got a $400 paperweight sitting on my desk

No. The secpack is not in the phone, but in the update file package and it's encrypted. That I guess will be the hardest part to crack.
Jailbreaking will allow activation and potentially running a new unlock program. It was a major achievement, as Apple really made it harder this time.

aviegas, does this do anything for finding a way to downgrade the baseband of the 1.1.1 to the same version that is on the 1.0.2? Thats what im really waiting for, its not the whole thing, but at least i can get an unlocked phone up and running with phone functions. i wonder how far off that is.

jailbreak is required to be done in order to try and activate the phone thats that,
sec pack is in the firmware file , it is required to get write access over baseband,
it seems it will take some more time before we can decrypt and get write access over the baseband, I think the first solution that would come out would be downgrading the baseband to 3.xx and then probably some days later on patching the new baseband
