Want to buy new iPhone, will it be unlockable?
I'm thinking to take the plunge and buy a new iPhone but it probably would then be with 1.1.2. Does this mean I wouldn't be able to unlock it, at least not easily? And is it safe to assume that eventually it would be unlockable, even if not right away? I'm interested mostly in having an internet device, wi-fi would work even if it's locked, right?
thanks.

An ipod touch will do wifi perfectly for ya AND not need to be unlocked or anything.

1. it will definitely come with 1.1.2 and the infamous 4.6 bootloader
2. there will be a solution to software unlock it (refer to pspsully's post) or you can unlock it straight away with a TurboSim
3. After jailbreaking and activation, you will have an iPod touch with camera which means internet will work, so will iPod, youtube etc. just that you cannot use it as a phone.

thanks for the info. I have been thinking about getting the iPod Touch instead but it would be nice if I could eventually use Edge and not just wi-fi (and maybe even the phone), but trying to decide if it's worth the extra money and hassle of unlocking an iPhone.

Owning a "non-official" iPhone will always bear the risk that you might end up with a nice and shiny BRICK, IF you're lucky maybe an iPod touch.
So my advice can only be: IF you live in a country which offers the iPhone "officially", go for it. IF not and money is not something you shake out of your underpants like sh.t, you better get another phone. Unless you're a masochist or a very very skilled programmer/hardware guy.
With each and every firmware update, the chance to get an easy activation/jailbreak/unlock solution shrinks. Even worse if Apple decides to update the bootloader version, like it happened now.
A little reminder: T-Mobile Germany still sells officially unlocked iPhones at ANY german T-Mobile shop (it has to be a T-Mobile ONLY shop!) and this offer may end tomorrow (thursday).
The french iPhone is slightly cheaper but it seems it can be sold only to french residents, meaning that if you want to buy it, you need a french passport or a french foreign resident photo id.

The iPod Touch 16 Gb. costs the same as the iPhone 8 Gb. i think that you can go with the iPhone, and in the worst scenario you can use everything except the phone functionality, you can use it as an iPod and as an internet device, everything works but the phone. And when the unlock software is available, you will also have a great phone.
I have 2 phones with the version 1.1.2 and the work fine, but the phone functionality part is wainting to be unlock.

well if you unlock it you are going to have to pay for edge usage anyway....if all you want is wifi then the touch is not bad. An unlocked phone will always be one step behind an up-to-date unlocked touch or iphone. And you wont have to worry about bricking your touch with updates or anything.
Depends on what you want, but really - if you want a phone, you can get a 3G phone with MMS support (2 things that the iphone can not do) for 59-99euro (in most countries that would also come with 50-100euro call credit). An unlocked iphone will just give you a lot more hassle and slower inet access. Its worth it to some people, cos they look a bit more trendy, but i guess it all just depends on what you want!

Oh! and the activation process to activate an iPhone version 1.1.2 IS very simple, just take 15 minutes. I can send you the complete guide and the necessary software if you want.
Contrary to what Matlock says, there is no hassle to have an iphone activated or unlocked and there is no way the internet is slower on an iphone just because is an iphone, that would depend on the internet connection not the phone itself, and besides, you can connect up to 54 gbits thru the WiFi, i don't know if other phone can have that AND a decent (not limited) web browser.
Let me put it in this way, the iphone if not a phone, is an a very small computer running Mac OS X operating system that can also make GSM calls and no other phone is like that.
