Contrary to what Matlock says, there is no hassle to have an iphone activated or unlocked and there is no way the internet is slower on an iphone just because is an iphone, that would depend on the internet connection not the phone itself, and besides, you can connect up to 54 gbits thru the WiFi, i don't know if other phone can have that AND a decent (not limited) web browser.

Let me put it in this way, the iphone if not a phone, is an a very small computer running Mac OS X operating system that can also make GSM calls and no other phone is like that.
I was referring to the iPhone using Edge rather than 3G.

I also think that you will find that there is hassle when unlocking the iPhone - apple does not want you to do it (unless you actually buy the unlocked edition of it). For example, the current new out of the box ones cannot be unlocked - unless you disassemble the hardware with surface mount equipment and reprogram it to an older firmware - surely that counts as hassle?

My point was that if you really just want it for wifi access the touch is probably the better option.

OK, good points to weigh out. About the shiny brick -- is there a chance that the iPhone could brick and even the wi-fi and ipod wouldn't work? I've done some searching around and can't really find any cases where it was really a completely useless brick. Usually it sounds like the phone part doesn't work and the rest does. Or am I missing something?

ok, this will be the ultimate table

+money + skill + patiente --> go for iphone and unlocked yourself (help dev team)
+money + skill - patiente --> go for ipod touch
+money - skill + patiente --> go for iphone and wait to be unlocked
+money - skill - patiente --> go for ipod touch
-money + skill + patiente --> go for iphone and wait to be unlocked (grab some money from somewhere)
-money + skill - patiente --> go for iphone and wait to be unlocked (grab some money from somewhere)
-money - skill + patiente --> go for another GSM phone and wait the iphone low price again
-money - skill - patiente --> go for another GSM phone
Great table, i just can add 2 things.

    1) An iPod Touch WILL bue always an iPod Touch.
    2) An iPhone 1.1.2 working as an iPod and internet device, can be upgraded in the future to a GSM phone.

Again, if someone buy an iPhone today, it can happen 2 thing, the iPhone comes with FW 1.1.1 or below, in which case you can use everything, or it comes with FW 1.1.2 which means you can use it as an iPod Touch, for now, but it can be upgradeable to a phone in the future.

pja2, if you want to make sure that the iphone you want to buy WILL be unlockable you can buy it in ebay and ask the seller if it is unlockable. is gonna cost you a little bit more, but you will be sure that everything will work.

I am getting a locked phone from USA in next 3-4 days. Please provide me links to the latest for unlocking and loading third party applications. I have searched a lot, there is lot of material and can't decide which version should be used. I have patience but am a layman, and would prefer to have least of commands to unlock.
How I start if the it comes with firmware 1.1.2.
And how to start if it comes with firmware 1.1.1
Do I have to use both jailbreak and anysimv1.1.
Whether the guide given at http://hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=15567 is the latest or there is some better way.
Can I do it all by myself without much knowledge of Mac software.

So I'm still curious about the "shiny BRICK". Does anyone know of someone who's phone bricked and nothing can be used, no iPod, no wifi, no camera? This is what I'm afraid of, I'm willing to spend a little more and can wait a while to unlock the phone part if it's not possible right away.
