Check the serial number on the back of the box, there's a week number hidden in there.

Week 38 and under are 1.0.2 or older firmware
Week 39 could be either 1.0.2 or 1.1.1 (50% chance)
    Week 40+ are all 1.1.1

I was hoping that was the case. On the box of the phone I already have are two numbers:

    Carrier Part No. 69001
    IMEI 0113000002959782

Don't know what those mean and don't see any 38/39/40 in there. In the phone itself is a s/n but there's no clue there either.

    What do you think?

By serial number are you meaning that IMEI number?

I checked the s/n also; in both cases the 4th & 5th numbers are 30. Is it for sure that's how to tell? Week 30? Does that sound right?

no serial number is the string of number on the back of the box, not the imei number.
week 30 is perfectly FINE, it is the older firmware, go ahead and grab it.

indobbo1, there has to be something different along the way before you bought your phone.

Did you buy your phone from online or an independent reseller, not from ATT or the Apple Store?
Did your friend try to unlock the phone before you check your FW?

This case is usually a result from someone trying to downgrade 1.1.1 to 1.0.2.
