Default Virginized 1.0.2 Still Gets Incorrect SIM Error

I am trying to help a friend recover his phone from a series of unfortunate events.

This is what he had explained to me:

    1) Bought original iPhone with FW 1.0.2
    2) Unlocked it with anySIM1.02
    3) "Out of curiosity" updated to FW 1.1.1 --- Phone was rendered useless
    4) Using the magic restore process, he brought the phone back to life, albeit still useless because of the updated BB
    5) Following the guide on this forum that consists of ieraser, etc. to restore old BB
    6) THIS IS WHERE HE MADE THE MISTAKE (by not reading the disclaimer that anySIM 1.1 only works with virgin 1.0.2 or 1.1.1): Using anySIM 1.1 to unlock the phone which resulted in error and iTunes refuses to accept it ("may be damaged and cannot be activated")

I came to the rescue by virginizing it based on the guide found here as well. The process went smoothly. But anySIM failed to unlock it --> "The BB was flashed successfully but failed to unlock. Use minicom to check, etc."

Has anyone encountered this scenario? I checked the Firware version and it is properly set at 03.14.08_G...

By any chance this phone has used up the unlocking counter?

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Have you tried using the new SIM? anySIM said exactly the same to me, but when inserting my non ATnT SIM everything worked.
AFAIK this message appears if you leave the ATnT SIM in while unlocking. You should start anySIM with your NEW ( non ATnT SIM) inside

Yes, I actually left the T-Mobile SIM card in during the anySIM unlock process.

Also, the IMEI was not changed after the virginizing process. It remains at 0049...

    Still researching further.

    Thanks for your suggestion nevertheless.
