I have a buddy that I am buying a few phones for, and my task is to unlock these phones and ship them to him. I am very concerned about bricking the phones (since they are not mine). I would have to assume at this point that most new phones purchased from the apple store or AT&T are installed with the 1.1.1 firmware. Is it possible to go from the virgin 1.1.1 firmware to 1.02 unlocked? Any help in shedding some light on this would be great.

I thought you can downgrade a Stock 1.1.1 iPhone to 1.0.2 to enable jailbreak but the baseband will stay at 1.1.1 (for now) so no Calls/SMS/EDGE?

Its luck at the moment. Some people are saying 1.0.2 are still available while others are gettign 1.1.1...
Serial numbers can help you find out without opening the box.

What serial numbers should i be looking for and will apple really just let me into their inventory to search for specific serial numbered devices?
