The above mentiond tutorial is the one to go for. If you DFU restore after virginizing you'll get a clean install. When redsn0w is finished iTunes will offer to "restore from a backup" or "setup as a new iPhone".
If you use the restore option the iPhone will be cluttered with old and outdated stuff from 1.0.2. I always recommend to setup as a new iPhone. 1.0.2 to 3.0 is a big step. It is like a regular PC: on big updates always clean install. This way the iPhone wont slow or stuff like this. i have an iPhone 2G here at 3.0, it is fine.

After virginizing go direct to 3.0.

I doubt the db files will work. As far as I remember the db format changed in 1.1.2, again in 2.0 so I would not even try it. as I said, sync with itunes and Outlook/Addressbook before at 1.0.2.

You'll be loosing SMS and call history, notes and stuff - is this really a big problem??? If you cant live without them and want a guaranty to have them - stay at firmware 1.0.2 ;-)

Well, the SMS' I can do without. Notes - will hv to kinda figure a way out.

On notes: At fw 1.0.2 you can mail notes, right? Mail 'em to your account. Then at fw 3 it is way easier. Notes can be synced between iphone and PC/Mac. So when at 3.0 just copy the contents of the mailed notes into the app (Mail > Notes on mac, Outlook on Win).

Honestly, I don't think running 2.x or 3.0 will make your phone run slower.
On an iphone 2G, running firmware 2.x or 3.0 does not make a big difference. With that said, I don't think you are the type of user that will constantly updating phone. The reason I say that is because you are still on 1.0.2 when most people are on 2.x . Because of that, I say go to 3.0 because it will be quite a while before you will update again. Most application tested / designed for fw 2.x run fine on fw 3.0. Those that don't run under 3.0 will soon be updated for compatibility.

I say 3.0 + redsnow.

I'm also trying to upgrade my unlocked iphone 2G from 1.02 to 3.0, but the app VT-100 is not installed in my iphone and the installer is not working anymore to load it. Could you please tell me how to load VT-100 to my iphone to run the virginizer.
