update modem firmware only?
I know this is probably the opposite of what every one wants to do here but I have an iphone activated on att and jail broken with 1.02 firm ware. I would like to just upgrade the latest modem firmware (hoping to fix dropped calls) and keep my phone with the 1.02 firmware and jail broken.
Can this be done? Can I just flash the modem and not the phone firmware?
Rather not have to update to 1.1.1 and then downgrade.

You're pretty much doing the exact same thing as updating to 1.1.1 then downgrade to 1.0.2
no difference

Peteo, it would be nice if that could be done, but since we still don't have access to the 1.1.1 BB, or the firmware DMGs it's therefore not possible at this time. The only solution that exists is to upgrade after backuping up all your files and then downgrading again to 1.0.2 and starting over from scratch.
PLEASE NOTE HOWEVER, if you've used the AnySIM unlock then upgrading will render your phone UNUSABLE until such time as a workaround is found. DO NOT DO THIS TO YOURSELF IF THAT'S THE CASE. However, if you've unlocked using SimFree/IPSF then you're ok and you can consider such an operation so long as you feel comfortable with doing so. To get your phone back to the way it was before takes someone that knows the procedure no less than 45-90 minutes, but take your time and do it right.
