Unlocking wifi complications
Seeking help with my unlocking woes. First, let me say I had already successfully unlocked a 1.02 iphone before.
This is for my wife's iphone (I didn't know beforehand the firmware version, but I suspect that since it was purchased 2 weeks ago is a 1.1 iphone)
My steps are as follows (Mac)
- Power + Sleep button. I noticed here that a yellow triangle didn't appear but a picture of a cord + a cd was shown instead (connect to itunes is what it was trying to tell me)
- Itunes detected iphone in recovery mode so I did Option + restore to install iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw
- Got error 1013 at the end.
- I panicked and thought that my only way out was to do a normal Itunes firmware update via update button. So I did it
- Read more and realize that it was "normal", because of the modem firmware differences. So I installed iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw again, with the 1013 error at the end of the process
- Ran independence to successfully activate (and jailbrake) it.
The issue is that no wifi networks are detected. I can't type in the network name either. Still won't connect. I've tried airplane mode on-off, reset network settings to no avail. Nowifi networks are detected. The carrier signal isn't detected either, it says searching.. and then no service.
When I go to general settings it says Firmware 1.02 and modem firmware 04.01.13_G
Any help will be appreciated.

I forgot to ask whether it's normal for a brand new phone not to detect any carriers,
Does a brand new phone show a signal level at the top left corner, even before starting ATT activation?
This is a brand new phone. Never been unlocked & activated right?.

Well, it's never been unlocked but it has been activated and jailbroken via Independence as I mentioned at be begining of this thread
restore back to 1.1.1 and start over.
Use the latest independence because that fix some minor stuff.
I'm not familiar with the MAC tools arsenal but that's what I've heard.
Already tried that
1) Let iTunes do a clean update to 1.1
2) Ran Independence 1.2.5 to activate.
The procedure works fine, independence tell you to first downgrade to 1.0.2 firmware, etc, etc. I end up with a activated (and jailbroken) 1.02 iphone but can't see the wifi networks, hence can't continue unlocking, etc. Independence lets me install openssh, etc in the iphone but that doesn't help me if I can ssh to it. I wish there were other ways to put bbupdater, etc to downgrade the baseband (I suspect that this is my problem)
but this is a virgin 1.1.1 iphone , jailbroken, activated and NOT UNLOCKED; there's no advantage of doing the baseband stuff since it never been touched. the problem is elsewhere I think.
Too bad, you have Mac, otherwise i would try CARNIVAL because it does not require restore to 1.0.2 - but that requires wifi as well.
Oh. after restoring to 1.1.1 - can you try the #307 trick to get to contact, wifi setting. Try search the forum for that. I want to know the state of your WIFI at 1.1.1
Found the info for you (from CARNAVAL)
Turn on your phone and 'slide for emergency' so you can reach the dial pad.
echo 2) Dial this number: *#307# and press the green 'CALL' button
echo (as you're making a call)
echo 3) Your phone will start to ring. Don't pick it up just yet.
echo 4) Erase the numbers previously typed and type '0' alone
echo and press the call again.
echo 5) You phone will be riging again, pick it up now an put on hold.
echo 6) Your phone will ring again, for this time you decline the call.
echo 7) After declining the call you will be brought to the main (unlocked) keypad.
here you go do (taken from http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=11920)
Create a fake person name and under URL, type in prefs://, hit save, hit done.
Click on the url, it will take you back to Settings, choose the correct wifi, make sure the IP address is still the same and set Auto lock to NEVER.
Hit the home button, it will take you to the activation page again.

Well, I've tried it before but I'm doing it right now anyway. So, prefs://1F takes me to all settings
Wi-Fi is Not Connected. The list of wireless networks in my area (10 more or less) aren't showing (don't pop up). I can't manually connect to my network by putting it's name. In my network I have another iphone 192.168.1.6 and a macbook 192.168.1.8
I must say that *#307# is a bit erratic. Sometimes I get a key keypad again, and have to restart the iphone since the answer button isn't available when the phone rings, or an 'error performing request' shows. So, usually in one in five attempts I manage to answer to myself and get to the address book.
I have a windows machine so I could try the carnival. I'm up for anything at this moment, specially if it doesn't start with a 1.02 downgrade. Now, the wifi not working, what could that be?
we have to resolve the wifi part fist before you proceed with either methods.
wifi on the phone is working. it is seeing other network but not yours.
on your wifi accesspoint, turn off encryption, enable SSID broadcast for now.
you should be able to see your SSID and connect.
if your accesspoint is not handing out DHCP address. stick in a static address such as 192.168.1.20, mask 255.255.255.0 and gateway I assume it's 192.168.1.1
Please try that.
EDIT: sorry i misread , you said wifi in your area is not showing up. Strike the second sentence above.
just try putting in those parameters and see.
may be you have a defective wifi on the phone. I'm saying this because your baseband has not been touch.

Thanks dtube, for your patience. Sorry, I didn't express myself clearly enough. I meant to say that none of the wifi networks in my building here in Madrid are showing, including mine. I've already tried to remove the WEP encryption in my router, reset the router, etc. And, of course, tried to type in the name of my wireless network and still refuses the connection. My router is set not to hide SSID. By the way, the other iphone I have picks it up correctly.
btw, I find strange that iphone doesn't have a refresh network list kind of thing
