I was wondering how possible it would be to take phones bought in the USA to French Orange stores and unlock them from there. How does the unlock process work, and would that be possible? I have an address in France, and I have a contract with Orange thats been going for 6 months now.

Is it something that Apple keeps a close watch on?

i am busy with that topic as well, because in a week i will be in paris with my us iphone....

i have read that orange would unlock your us phone for 100€ when you get a contract with them( does not need to be iphone contract)....

i have read too that they would unlock your phone as well for 100€ when you are an existing orange subscriber....

of course the information does not come from official sources!

i think this is all theory. i think it depends on the staff in the orange store....
if they are cool they will unlock it for 100 bucks if they are not they won't. maybe it helps waving a hundred euro bill around...

unfortunately my friend in paris i am going to visit is not an orange customer...
i will try to be nice and friendly, telling them i want to use it regularly with a prepaid card, since i was every to weeks in france... blablabla
maybe if i am lucky they will sell me a prepaid card charged with 100 bucks and unlock it then...

i emailed to the customer support in english a week ago concerning this topic but i did not get a reply yet

Guys you need to use the search function. This has been dealt with in a number of threads already. Orange in France are not obliged to unlock an iPhone from any other country.

The phone must be purchased from orange in France to have it unlocked.

What I'm asking is how they differentiate it. I mean if I bring an iPhone from the USA and live in Paris, and have an Orange contract, why wouldn't they unlock it? My concern is if they will unlock more than one, and how looked over the process is. If I can walk in with 3 500euro notes, why won't they unlock several phones for me?

I think its possible. If you have enough money to drop, and you find some insecure sales rep, I don't see why you couldn't pull this off.

If you have that much money to "drop" just buy a turbosim... It's proven to work and it costs less than 100 Euros. That's my take...

exactly. i don't think -as stated before- if they're "cool" that they would even care about a contract with the unlock or so...

100€ is money

and technically its simply your imei that is put on an apple whitelist as far as i know...
so where is the difference from a us imei to a french imei... there is not, i don't believe there is.
i don't think that the whitelist guy who puts your imei on this list will check if a specific imei has its origin in a US apple store....
