649 euros with 100 euro unlocking fee

So in principle I can go to France (I'm in Switzerland) with my oob 1.1.2, pay 100 euros, let them unlock it and it should still be under warranty? Or is it something they do with just *their* phones?

Isn't it 649,- EUR including the unlocking fee? They have a few options:
399,- EUR with iPhone plan
549,- EUR with any Orange plan
649,- EUR unlocked and free
This should bring prices for imported phones with Anysim etc. to a normal limit. 649,- EURO including warranty is a good deal, I'd say, compared to a phone that was imported and comes without warranty (as it's tied to a phone plan).

I don't think so. They will do it with their phones only. I hope they have been more careful and the process is running smoothly compared to t-mobile .-)

It's 649 EUR without plan and a free unlock after 6 months.

As others have posted here, it is 649 + free unlock after 6 months or 649 + 100 for an immediate unlock (all of these prices include no requirement of an Orange France service plan).
There are other prices (399 or 549) that depend on what type of Orange France service plan you purchase. For these, too, you can get a free unlock in 6 months or pay a 100 fee for an immediate unlock (but then you still have to honor your service plan obligations, too).
You can't just bring your phone into France and demand an unlock for 100, to my knowledge. Since Orange France didn't sell you that phone, I don't believe they have any obligation to provide you an unlock.

what if you are travelling and wish to use that phone or have bought one in the UK and then moved to France?

Please don't forget that the T-Mobile unlocking started with a court order. I doubt they were ready to have a "smooth process" at all.
Aren't they requiring ID's and proof of residence in France for the unlocked models? I doubt you can just hop over the border from Switzerland.

I think you're out of luck. I believe the French law(s) that give phone owners the right to have their phone unlocked apply to the seller of the phone -- so if Orange France sold you the phone, they have certain unlock obligations. If you purchased your phone from somewhere else, then you have to deal with your seller.
Example: you purchase from O2 in the UK. Orange France didn't sell you the phone, so they have no obligation/duty to unlock for you. Since UK law doesn't require O2 to provide you an unlock, they have no obligation/duty to unlock for you.
You "acquire" your rights depending on where and from whom you purchased the phone.
Now, Orange France might decide to offer an "unlock" service for 100 for anybody's phone if you bring it to France, but I suspect that Apple would have a problem with that, and it might violate Orange France's contractual obligations to Apple, so I wouldn't bet on this happening.
