That is what I expected. So Orange France's apparent willingness to unlock a non-French iPhone if the customer signs up for (or has) an Orange France rate plan (and also pays the €100 fee) is going above and beyond the call of duty.

(But not a stupid way of trying to grab more customers!)

    Hi
I still think the biggest questions are: What happens if we buy a French iphone fully unlocked and take it back to the UK or the US etc..? Will it work..? Can apple block it..? Do they have a right to block it..? Etc

I cant wait to no the answers it these Questions

I have bought a iPhone in France yesterday evening when the orange shops opened after 06h30 pm to sell the iphone.

I paid 650 euro for the iphone with a mobicard, this is a prepaid card, with 10 euro credit on it.

I'm since then trying to get it unlocked.

I contacted the support of Orange like they told me in the shop yesterday, support told me that I need to put 100 euro on my prepaid card, so they charge me the 100 euro. After that I should get a mail confirming that my phone is unlocked.

the tricky part is that you need to buy the card for the 100 euro credit before leaving france because otherwise you can not recharge your card for another month. (this is my situation for the moment. I need to go back to France later this week to get the recharge card)

When I have an update I let you guys know.
You can buy credit on orange.fr using your credit card it works even if your are abroad.

    The definite answer is YES.

You have to go to the orange shop buy the 649€ option (it is calles without plan) and pay 100€ more (unlocking).

so it is 749 € fully desimlocked

    it is quite expensive,

The unlock is done by APPLE and not by Orange F. As soon as Orange F tries to have a US iPhone IMEI unlocked, it will be refused.

This "problem" has been discussed in the past between Orange F and Apple and the agreement is valid ONLY for iPhones sold by Orange F, not iPhones sold in the US. Maybe the person who sent you this information doesn't know that Apple knows which IMEI is for a US iPhone, french iPhone, etc. and he probably thinks that he just forwards your IMEI to Apple and it gets unlocked.

Another thing: according to our sources, the IMEI unlock seems to work with bootloader 4.6 only for various (security?) reasons.

    Good luck...
Quite probable, but after your source stating the false info of requiring a passport to buy the phone I don't know.

On a different note however if it were limited to 4.6 how would US phones be unlocked years down the road as was (allegedly) stipulated to AT&T customers? Just curious.

    Cher M XXX,

    Cordialement

It is the lettre from orange customer service, that means : you are using an iphone from US, it is compatible, you can ask to be unlocked, contact us.

It is evident that orange will ask the customer to pay something and take a plan but the fact is : they can desimlock it (or ask to apple given the imei to white list it).

I'am just telling that to say that some one should analyse how they do ...

With this Apple can actually traceroute the ways of their US iPhones. What could they be interested in? Well of course in the shops selling major loads indirectly to the grey market...

It can also be used to traceroute it to your friend who just ordered some of them for you at Apple's US shop...

I will note that my review of the Orange France website only shows the iPhone available via that site for €399 plus your choice of rate plan -- I do not see an option to purchase it via the internet for €649 with or without the additional unlock fee.

Have YOU bought one as a non french national/resident? :p
Please don't insult me by saying I made false claims. Thanks.

A little note regarding the missing internet offer (unlocked contract-free iPhone) from Orange F: it can be bought only at a local Orange F shop so far.
Also the IMEI of the sold iPhone will be transmitted to Orange HQ and further to Apple at the spot, you can't just take it home and do it yourself.
Usually, they add a name to the IMEI, I don't know if Orange F also attaches an address to that name or a photo id serial. The IMEI and name thing isn't confirmed yet, so it may be wrong.

I know why but if I tell you, then I'd have to kill you.

If you guys love playing Quiz Show, here's a tough one for YOU:
Why doesn't Apple "do it" in the UK and Germany?
Trust me, there are by FAR more US iPhones in the UK and Germany than they are in France, most of the tourists I met in US Apple Shops during my various trips to the US over the past few months were Germans, English, Italians and South Americans.

If you give me a reasonable reply, I'll answer your question (without killing you...I promise. :p )

Little hint (I love little hints): Apple doesn't like selling unlocked iPhones and the only reason why they don't forbid selling US iPhones to ANYONE who walks in into an Apple Store is because they seem to be afraid of human rights groups and of course they still make a buck or two selling these phones to foreigners. Not to forget the other advantage it has, they can follow our discussions here on Hackint0sh and find countermeasures, adjust sales strategies, etc. to make them happy (and us probably not so happy ).
