Ok, guys, here is the real deal.
I have bought a iPhone in France yesterday evening when the orange shops opened after 06h30 pm to sell the iphone.
I paid 650 euro for the iphone with a mobicard, this is a prepaid card, with 10 euro credit on it.
I'm since then trying to get it unlocked.
I contacted the support of Orange like they told me in the shop yesterday, support told me that I need to put 100 euro on my prepaid card, so they charge me the 100 euro. After that I should get a mail confirming that my phone is unlocked.
the tricky part is that you need to buy the card for the 100 euro credit before leaving france because otherwise you can not recharge your card for another month. (this is my situation for the moment. I need to go back to France later this week to get the recharge card)
When I have an update I let you guys know.
I'm not a resident of France, nor do I have a residence in France. I'm a belgian with an belgian Id-card.
That was the only thing they needed to sell me an Iphone. (and money of course)
My French translations aren't great, but the person does say that you need to become an Orange France subscriber (vous devez être abonné Orange). I'll leave it someone better than me to translate the rest of it (I kind of get the sense of the French post, but I'll only embarrass myself if I try to translate it accurately, and since the rest of the post discusses the prices, I'd rather someone get it right).
The post also cites to the following source:
I'm not saying any of this is true, only that this discussion is going on over with our amis français.
On reading further on frenchiphone.com, the posts suggest that you can get your US iPhone unlocked for the €100 fee but you must get or have an Orange France subscription of some kind, but not necessarily an iPhone rate plan.
Again, take this with a grain of salt (grain de sel), until someone actually does it.
Also, remember that getting a service plan from a foreign cell phone company is not always easy -- that's where credit checks and local bank references are usually necessary, things that non-residents usually can't get or don't have.
I would tend to doubt that Orange France would offer the €100 unlock service for someone who only gets a pay-as-you-go account.
(There is discussion by people who DO have Orange France accounts that it would be a lot cheaper to buy the US iPhone for $399 and then unlock it in France for €100 than buying the phone in the first place from Orange France. This is probably partially caused by the US dollar being worth something akin to a marshmallow).

u can unlock ur US iphone if u have an orange subscription which isnt my case. Im just wondering how it will work for 3.9 bootloader...Anyway im sure a keygen will be out soon by the dev team once it's done; and im wondering if Apple FRANCE handle support of US iphones.
