NEVER EVER have I read so much BULLSHIT (misunderstood facts, false information, confusion, stupidity) in one single thread. Oh boy.
The funniest post was actually the one who asked if he can take his US iPhone and have it officially unlocked for 100 Euro in France. Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy.
To those interested in an unlocked Orange F iPhone, I highly recommend reading the two major T-Mobile Germany iPhone threads. A lot of the posted information is valid for the french iPhone too, just as a little hint.

Cher M XXX,

It is the lettre from orange customer service, that means : you are using an iphone from US, it is compatible, you can ask to be unlocked, contact us.
It is evident that orange will ask the customer to pay something and take a plan but the fact is : they can desimlock it (or ask to apple given the imei to white list it).
I'am just telling that to say that some one should analyse how they do ...

In fact Orange send a letter to their customer, it is 100 € to unsimlocked BUT it relies on the fact you are already an Orange Customer (and I am).
I have to analyse if the 24 month plan is a good deal (trouble here is to find good competitor for unlimited data plan).
It is very easy to understand that they want to get the 6000 iphone customers present in france now. Apple will earns 15 € on them and Apple 35€ each month.
It is good for Apple business so they do it. It is easy to understand.

May I say that whoever sent you this, doesn't have a CLUE?
The unlock is done by APPLE and not by Orange F. As soon as Orange F tries to have a US iPhone IMEI unlocked, it will be refused.
This "problem" has been discussed in the past between Orange F and Apple and the agreement is valid ONLY for iPhones sold by Orange F, not iPhones sold in the US. Maybe the person who sent you this information doesn't know that Apple knows which IMEI is for a US iPhone, french iPhone, etc. and he probably thinks that he just forwards your IMEI to Apple and it gets unlocked.
Another thing: according to our sources, the IMEI unlock seems to work with bootloader 4.6 only for various (security?) reasons.
Good luck...

Trust me mate, asking a question's never been stupid...
If everyone would be as acculturate as you are on these topics maybe all the poor fellas as I am wouldn't need a forum, would they?

Iphone went out officially yesterday so I have no CLUE as I had no time to do it my self but there a thread growing a lot on frenchiphone.com forum saying people did it.
ANYWAY it is not a way to find a hack for iphone with 4.6 baseband.
BUT I insist that Apple will do, should, and is going to unlock US iphone that have been imported, hacked BECAUSE they will earn something like 15€ a month. if they unlock and customer takes the orange plan, orange will give back 30% of the plan to apple.
So if someone can explain me why apple will not do it I would be interested.
Last thing it seems to have a bug in french keyboard so pressure will be very high to release a new firmware (and adding the fix on operator that are managed in germany : they can not sell iphone officially unlocked not compliaent with some operators)

I'm afraid that you do not understand very well your own language, mon ami. I do not see where the phrase: "you can ask to be unlocked, contact us." is in the original message. What they are telling you is that IF your iPhone is unlocked (they do not care how) you can take advatadge of their iPhone plans, no more, no less.
In any case this is already good news: the iPhone plans are not exclusive to the FR iPhone, so I could simply switch my old Orange plan and get everything working as if I have bought it in France. Of course, if apple sends a new baseband firmware update, then I will for sure lose my unlocked state and end with a very expensive iPod + expensive and useless phone plan until a new unlock method appears.
Cheers,
Gusano.

Re: the correspondence from Orange France -- I agree -- I see nothing in that correspondence that says they will unlock an iPhone purchased in the US if you join up for an Orange France plan. That correspondence only says that if you have a previously unlocked iPhone, it will work with an Orange France SIM.
Now, is it possible that Orange France would agree to unlock a phone purchased elsewhere if the person signs up for a minimum-term service contract? Yes.
Would that violate Orange France's agreements with Apple? I have no idea.
If Orange France offers service to an iPhone customer who got his phone elsewhere, is Orange France still required under French law to provide an unlock after 6 months? Again, I have no idea.
But -- it's past 18:30 CET, so, cherchez l'iPhone!
