Is there actually only a certain number of attempts to unlock the iphone? If so how many? I used iunlock at first then restored to out of the box state and used ipsf so would that actually count as 2 attempts or not because of the difference between the 2 ???

If your ipsf unlock was successful then the unlock attempt counter doesn't matter anymore, since your phone is in state 5 "unlocked and not lockable".

if you virginize using geohot's method, does it put the iPhone in state 5, or does it reset the counter?

it resets the counter, but ipsf unlocked phones cant be viriginized, only anysim's or older free unlocks. and none of the free unlocks can give state 5
